ADDRESS TO THE NATION BY PRIME MINISTER HON. TILLMAN TH...
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, GOOD EVENING, Many of you would know that service to the people of Grenada is the most important value in my public life. My firm belief in high ethical standards, honesty, integrity and accountability, and living those values are my guiding principles. It is for those reasons that I spent years in jail, refusing to compromise those values. It is for those reasons that I embraced everyone in the spirit of reconciliation and genuine inclusiveness. This I firmly believe was, and remains in the best interest of uniting Grenada. Having the opportunity to lead this government as part of a team which advocated the good governance agenda, places upon me an honourable duty to act in the public interest at all times. For me, it is always about people, not power. The members of my government must also be clear as to the importance of this standard of personal responsibility. One requirement of that obligation is to combat wrong-doing regardless of who is responsible. Fellow Grenadians, As Prime Minister, I have been careful to act with fairness and even-handedness in dealing with violations of the public trust, by members of my Government. When former members of my government crossed a particular line in the past, I acted accordingly and will consistently do so. I give you the assurance that just as I have treated with my own government colleagues, so too, I am resolved to fight wrong-doing by those in the previous administration as the evidence would justify. And WHO can honestly say that I am wrong for fighting wrong doing? Today, I advised His Excellency the Governor-General to revoke the appointment of the Hon. Joseph Gilbert as a Minister of Government. This action was taken in the public interest and in order to preserve the integrity of the Government of Grenada and to maintain the highest standards of Cabinet decision - making. The factual basis for this action, is irrefutable documented evidence, in writing, before me. It is established that the Hon. Joseph Gilbert, in his capacity as Minister for Works, on August 23rd, 2011, wrote to a foreign company, Harbour Holdings Limited, regarding a project known as the Ocean Crest Gaming Project. In that letter, the Minister represented to the Company that the Government of Grenada proposed to amend existing legislation pertaining to Gaming. The Minister gave the company the assurance that it would be issued a licence to operate a gaming facility on lot 8 at the Cruise Port in St. Georges and encouraged the company to proceed to finalize its financing arrangements for the purchase of Lot 8 in light of the pending license approval. These representations by the Minister were made in full knowledge that Cabinet had not taken any such decisions. Furthermore, the Minister did not seek Cabinet’s approval for his actions, nor did he inform the Cabinet of what he had done in its name in an important area of public interest. In this respect, the Minister must have been aware that his conduct was wrongful or was otherwise unconcerned as to his responsibility to the Cabinet. Ladies and gentlemen, such behaviour is not only highly irresponsible but disrespectful and abusive of the process of Cabinet. It is indefensible and cannot be condoned by this Government and should not be condoned by any other Government. It must be clearly understood by all, that this matter is not about the survival and stability of the duly elected Government of Grenada but about preserving our core values and building of a sustainable country. In fact, Mr. Gilbert’s actions, along with the demonstration of poor judgment surrounding it, must strike every citizen as being totally unacceptable on the part of a Minister of Government. As the leader of this nation, I am deeply concerned that the Minister’s inexplicable contravention of Cabinet’s authority has seriously compromised the Government of Grenada, and may well lead to significant damaging consequences. It is my responsibility to protect this nation from harmful consequences and I shall do so with all of the authority given to me as Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Fellow Grenadians, I take this opportunity, to comment briefly on matters of public interest concerning the National Democratic Congress, of which I am the Political Leader. It is clear to me, that all in the leadership of our Party have a responsibility to the People of Grenada; including and especially, those tens of thousands who share our values, who sacrificed and who worked hard to remove the last administration. These are the people to whom we owe a debt of gratitude and to whom we owe an obligation never to return to the corrupt practices of the former regime. It is you the people who by voting for the NDC, have put in place a government you trusted would serve all the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique with honour and integrity. I am convinced, that words and phrases like conspiracy, division, and ‘Party-within-a-Party’ are not consistent with the NDC BRAND that the people of Grenada have known and loved. Our Party has healed itself in the past and it is our duty to do all that is necessary to ensure that the NDC remains vibrant, powerful and capable of serving the people of Grenada for a very long time to come. We in the National Democratic Congress, like any other Party, would have to deal with the issue of succession at the right time. In this regard, I believe that all of us, members of the NDC, as well as our faithful supporters, would be comfortable with a scheduled, democratic and transparent process of change when the need arises. Ladies and Gentlemen The times are indeed challenging and difficult. However we have been weathering the storm relatively and comparatively well. We are doing much better than many of our neighbours. Our continued progress requires that all Grenadians work together to ride the turbulent waves. This is not the time for division and fragmentation. This is not the time for pursuing individual agendas. It is the time for collective nation-building. It is a time for greater commitment, greater sensitivity and caring and most of all a recognition that God is in control. We must give thanks for our many Blessings. In closing, I give the public the assurance that my Government will move speedily beyond this unfortunate issue. We will continue to fulfill our mandate to govern in accordance with the principles of good governance and the provisions and conventions of the Constitution of Grenada. Only this week, the House of Representatives approved a Motion putting into operation the Integrity in Public Life Legislation. The onus is on all Parliamentarians, in particular, and by way of example, to live up to its provisions. Finally, I invite you all to join with me in taking a stand against wrong-doing in public life. We must do so in order to preserve the fabric of our society and to establish for our leaders, clear standards that our children would be proud to emulate. I Thank You and May God Continue to Bless our Nation.

Observer I clearly share most of your views and fully know where you are coming from. I see some of our very weak brothers here are having great difficulty understanding what we are putting down, they have eyes but they cannot see, they have brains but they are unable to think clearly. I think some of them need to go away to other parts of the world and see how things are done when goverment functions properly and see what other countries actually look like and return to Grenada to give back or if not possible to contribute in some way from their present location. After I have seen the debt Keith Mitchel and his associates have left Grenada with, I am just truly disgusted.

Littleboy, I clearly understood and support your views, however, we will continue to see the same thing over and over again...maybe for the next 100 years unless we begin to effect change and open our people's minds as to what is happening around them. Judge Tamara Gill's hands are tied where sentencing is concerned. Take for example: RGPF officers who are involved in the seizure of drugs, contraband and other criminal activities are the main culprits. The RGPF Coast Guard officers are stealing the drugs, guns and other material evidences crucial to cases. When you have police officers at police stations stealing, selling and smoking the very same drugs seized for trial, such unethical and deplorable behaviors leave our judges with no other choice but to release our criminals back onto the streets. Tillman Thomas needs to subject every one of them to random drug testings, from the commissioner of police to janitorial person(s) at each police station. Police men are tampering with criminal cases for very little payoff or sex. Nobody is investigating what's going on, therefore, they are continuing to practice the same dirty habit which has been going on for decades. Money rules. They all have a price!

Observer we can become a republic and get away from the queen, we can offer a referendum to the people of Grenada and take it to the courts to get rid of England and the Privy Council, we can go to the Caribbean Court of Justice where it is my opinion bribery and corruption will take place. I think we have a serious problem with our own people and we need to make some real change. Our people are too corrupt, they like too much money. Maybe younger people who just graduated from college would do a better job than these thieves we have here. I have no confidence in them, but this is my opinion. I think if we put these people in jail when they commit crimes, we may see some changes but then again, we have these women judges like Gill who let them off so that makes it worse. I see no real promise for Grenada at this time and we are filled with so much debt that Mitchel left this country in, it is a sad situation

observer,we allow the privy council to make decisions for us,and yes we have to abide by it.you can't have it both ways.either you remove them from our system or you have to live by their decision.again i say observer,if the morons we had running the government had carried out the sentence,i wouldn't have to listen to you complaining about our system.

Littleboy, Karen, Joe, Stallion and Karen, I think some of us really don't get it. Our social, political and economically problems should not and cannot be blamed on one man. Our legal system is in disarray, corrupt and run by a group of self serving and opportunistic quasi-leagal and low level experts. The independence advocates should have been exiled or executed upon the return to Grenada from England. For example, France leveed the Haitian republic with a punishing fee of US$1,000,000,000.00 (one billion) dollars for its independence. Unfortunately, we as a people (grenadians) have no idea how much it cost us for ours-money wise. At the same time, we definitely know that it subjected us further into mental slavery and miseducation and blindness. The British ensured they extracted every valuable commodity from us-our ancestors and great great gand parents' strengths, values and morals and then released them to fend for themselves. They gave us a watered down education system which allowed those they trained and shaped to further oppress and suppress the voice and opinions of the people. Past and current governors are merely secret police of the queen. They are there to monitor and ensure Grenada does not go out of line. And Stallion, how dare you tell me that Tillman's hands were tied. He is the Prime Minister of an independent nation as you you seemed to have reiterated. How can the leader of an independent nation have no say in the legal and security of his own nation? This is a lame excuse. We have got to stop making excuses and attack the root cause of the problem. In addition, ok, you excuse him on the release stuff. Why can't you also excuse him on the employment part too? Something has got to be wrong with our sense of reasoning. One wrong does not make it right. Please look on the other side of the coin, people.

Gentlemen Grenada is supposedly an independent country but we are a soverign nation and the Queen is still the head of State and this is the main problem. We beg all over the world for everything. I doe know how we are existing with this sort of rulers and people we have here these days. We get little assistance from England, but the Queen is represented by the Governor General hey hey thats the one Grenadian lawyer who sold us out and while he was working as governor general, he also signed documents for the sale or of passing of the best piece of real estate to Hamilton, with Keith Mitchel and Antoine, another so called educated fool from another educated school. This one says he has a Ph.D. but he also took Church with him in Europe to make another Bubul. The Governor General was also the same one whose house when it was damaged by the storm loved Grenada so much, that he charged Grenada for the use of his own home when his housing unit was damaged by the storm. Now you see what a set of thieves and con-men we have running this Grenada. This is why we cannot get anywhere. This same Antoine had a few different jobs and was supposedly working for the goverment collecting a big check from Grenada and also one from Trinidad for working. How the hell can you be working two jobs at the same time and Mitchel was all with it too. This same Antoine's father got all that land from Keith Mitchel for little or nothing because he was party member and now the land is being sold at the higest prices in Grenada. The land should have been up for bid so every Grenadian who wanted a piece could have a chance so it could be sold to the highest bidder. You see how these theives are in this Grenada goverment, all past and present. None of dem eh good. Not one of dem and these Grenadians are so dam stupid, they still vote for them time and time again. What is wrong with our people? I just wanted you Stallion and Observer and Joe to understand. I'm sure Observer already knows the score. Keep you ears and eyes open

i did some resarch on the privy council and how we can abolish it.joe, first of all,i agree with your postings about the privy council.as much as we hate the decision to free the gang, tillman's hands were tied.the privy council is an appeal process for criminals and the gang of 17 had every right to appeal their case.if the morons we had in power when they were sentenced to hang had done their job,we wouldn't be having this conversation.anyways, back to the privy council abolishment.the grenada government was in the process of getting rid of council, but this process was delayed by hurricane ivan.the ccj(caribbean court of justice)would be used by the islands as their last place of appeals.grenada would be part of the ccj.unfortunately, this process is also delayed because they can't get the right judges for that court.so all in all, grenada is on track with getting rid of the council, but in life eveything takes time.
