NATIONAL TOBACCO STEERING COMMITTEE MEETS |
|
|
The National Tobacco Steering Committee has met to review its progress and strategies, and to consider future plans and programs, as Grenada moves close to passing new tobacco legislation.
The committee, which draws representation from a wide cross-section of organizations, met with Dr. Tomo Kanda, a consultant from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Office, and Tessa Stroude – PAHO’s Program Specialist in Grenada.
Grenada became a signatory to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) on June 29, 2004. It ratified its position in accordance with the protocol on August 14, 2007.
The guidelines of the FCTC of the World Health Organization (WHO) provide the foundation for countries to implement and manage tobacco control.
Since 1987, Grenada and other WHO member-states have been marking the annual observance of “World No Tobacco Day’’.
The day is designed to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and its lethal effects on humans.
Last year, the Grenada Health Ministry embarked on a project that involved erecting signs in government buildings to create awareness on the dangers of smoking.
The National Tobacco Steering Committee now plans on undertaking a massive and aggressive public education and awareness campaign, which also will focus on cigarette smoking dangers. |
