KOREAN MARINE SPECIALISTS CONDUCT COASTAL RESEARCH PROJ...
A team of marine specialists from the Republic of Korea are in Grenada this week to initiate work on a marine research project on the south east coast of Grenada. The project dubbed "Research on the South and South East Coast of Grenada" spans from Telescope, St Andrew to Point Saline St George's. This is the third visit to Grenada by Korean experts. During the last visit in December, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two Governments, signalling the start of the project. Both teams were engaged in a planning meeting on Tuesday in which discussions centred on the collection of relevant data to assist in the research activities. A field trip to project sites will be conducted on Wednesday afternoon. Some of the sites to be visited are Petit Bacaye, Grenville and Petite Calivigny. The research aims to support the development of a national policy for the Integrated Management of the Coastal and Marine zones of Grenada to promote their sustainable development, and to enhance the relations between the two countries through the successful implementation of the project. The scope of work include coastal marine investigations with reference to coastal elevation, water quality and physical oceanography; procurement of equipment and materials which is being provided by the Republic of Korea; dispatch of Korean experts to Grenada; and training of Grenadian experts in Korea. This project complements the international trade show Expo Yeosu 2012 in Korea in which a team from Grenada will participate. The theme for the expo is "the Living Ocean and Coast" which would highlight the importance of biodiversity, marine resources and sustainable activities in coastal areas. The budgeted cost of the project is US$500,000 and is expected to be completed by year end.
