PRIME MINISTER HEADS DELEGATION TO SUMMIT OF THE AMERIC...
Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas will head Grenada’s delegation to the Sixth Summit of the Americas in Cartegena, Colombia, on April 14 and 15. Prime Minister Thomas, accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Karl Hood and Foreign Service Officer, Podie Chitan, will leave Grenada on Thursday morning for Colombia where they will be joined by officials of the Grenada Mission to the Organisation of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. The meeting will discuss a wide range of issues, specific to the needs of the region, including poverty and inequality, disaster management and prevention, access to and use of technology to bridge the gap between rural and urban areas, security and regional and physical integration. Prime Minister Thomas agrees that the summit offers a unique forum for dialogue and mutual understanding among regional leaders who can engage in private, honest, bilateral discussions on various issues. “Grenada stands to benefit significantly, both from the summit and from bilateral meetings with leaders who have an interest in developing ties with Grenada and the Caribbean. The Summit of the Americas allows us to discuss shared challenges and concerns and come up with shared solutions,” Prime Minister Thomas said Wednesday. Grenada will seek support from the Summit, its organs and friendly governments, for expanding access to Information Communication Technology (ICT), to enable citizens to obtain employment, education and other services offered by local, regional and international institutions. Grenada will also use the occasion of the Summit to engage individual countries, including Peru and Mexico, in bilateral discussions on critical issues affecting both countries. Already, relations with Mexico have provided a number of Grenadians with scholarships to Mexican institutions. Ahead of the Cartagena Summit, Prime Minister Thomas met and held discussions with the Panamanian General Consul for Latin America and the Caribbean based in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Ceasar Gomez, in a bid to strengthen relations and explore opportunities in Trade, Maritime Security and Agriculture.

WHAT CAN THIS EMBATTLED LEADER ACHIEVE AT THE 6TH SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS: St. George, Grenada, April 12, 2012………..Given the ongoing disarray in the Hon Tillman Thomas led Government of Grenada and his NDC Party facing likely humiliation at the polls when he eventually calls the election, it is reasonable for Grenadians from all strata of the society to ask the simple question, “what will Thomas achieve on behalf of Grenada at the 6th Summit of the Americas?” The New National Party considers this as a timely and pertinent question given the likelihood that Thomas will spend more time burning up the phone lines between Cartagena and St. George’s for briefings on further party mischief and fallouts. The Prime Minister is acutely uneasy and preoccupied with as he has said the leftist in his Party – Cabinet members he recently referred to as EVIL with his good over evil dichotomy. What a testimonial. What a revelation – this coming from the mouth of our Prime Minister. While the NNP has no problem with the Summit’s agenda items and recognizes that this Meeting offers an important forum for dialogue and possible cooperation amongst nations. Thomas who is already known to have fallen short in his internal diplomacy, can he do Grenada’s business when he is currently embroiled in a party spat at home. Can he fruitfully interact and extract the type of support from leaders of attending nations that would result in significant benefits for the Grenadian people? Due to the fact that the Prime Minister chooses to mask his shortcomings by travelling with a large entourage, this is likely to be another joy ride where thousands of dollars which the country cannot afford will be spent or thrown down the drain. The NNP recognizes the importance of information communication technology tools and during its reign did much to broaden the policy and address the digital divide between rural and urban populations. However, given the current economic malaise in Grenada and the failure of the Thomas administration to address the economic climate, it is ample time for his government to broaden the developmental process so the continued outcry from various sectors of the economy can be minimized. The NNP is deeply concerned about the current situation in Grenada. If Hon. Tillman Thomas is honest about good governance and genuine with his claim of having concern for the nation’s population, and given his most recent comments that his party is divided and there are those in his ranks seeking to undermine his government; then the most responsible thing to do is to dissolve Parliament and seek a new electoral mandate.
