MDC STAGES SPORTS MEET AFTER TWO POSTPONEMENTS
Finally, Mac Donald College’s Annual Sports Meet took place on March 20th 2012 at the Fond Recreational Grounds. The sports meet was scheduled to take place on three occasions prior to that date (the 2nd, 9th and 16th of March), however it was postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. Everyone, i.e. the students and teachers of Mac Donald College and even the general public, began to believe that there would not be any sports meet this year until the acting principal Ms. Lorraine De Allie and the dedicated staff at the school decided to give it one last shot. When I woke up on Tuesday morning and peeped out my window, outside was a little overcast and rain was falling. I became saddened since I had the thought running through my mind that our sports meet would not be postponed, but canceled this time. Nevertheless I did not give up hope that the sun may emerge from those dark threatening grey clouds and permit us to hold our sports meet. Later that morning before I left home to go to the school, the sun finally came out and it was shining very brightly. I began smiling; I started feeling enthusiastic once more. When I arrived at the school, the Jumping Mat Handing over ceremony had already begun in the auditorium. Since I had missed the beginning of the ceremony, I did not bother to attend. Instead I went into the various classrooms and watched the cheerleaders change into their cheerleading outfits; they all looked absolutely stunning! After the Jumping Mat Handing Over ceremony was finished, the students assembled in the school yard to get ready for the march down to Fond. The Mac Donald College Cadet Corps led the match, followed by the various houses which were arranged in alphabetical order (Friday, Nyack, Taylor and Wright). Between Nyack and Taylor House was the Mac Donald College Drum Corps which provided music for the students to march. When the marching students arrived at Main Street Sauteurs, there were many spectators taking pictures and admiring the way in which the Cadets, students, members of the drum corps and especially the cheerleaders were elegantly dressed and marching precisely and briskly down to Fond. When the marchers arrived in Fond, everyone circled around the pasture in the same order that they had marched down. After taking the Eyes Right, they all assembled in the centre of the field, directly in front of the pavilion for the opening ceremony which began with prayer. The acting principal then made a few remarks. The national anthem was sung by a student, Sheldon Alexis and the athletes’ and officials’ oaths were done. The sports meet officially began when chairman, Mrs. Cyinnica Chitterman said “LET THE GAMES BEGIN!’’ Friday House (red) was out in the lead with 412 points, Taylor House (blue) was in second place with 348.5 points, Nyack House was in third place with 323.5 points and Wright House was in fourth place with 285 points. During the first half of the sports meet the highly anticipated races were the 100m junior boys and senior boys and girls, the 800m and 200m senior boys and senior girls. The students and spectators were overly excited about these races; it was these races that had the crowd on its feet and going wild. The excitement coming from the crowd in the pavilion made the athletes on the field so afraid that on two occasions there were false starts during the senior boys’ races. Some of the other races during this period included the 1500m sub-junior, junior and senior boys and girls, 100m prep, sub- junior boys and girls, 200m prep, sub-junior, junior boys and girls and the 800m open race. These events were as appealing to the crowd and most of the time everyone would just stare at the field as if he/she was watching the dramatic part of a romance movie. During this time as well the weather started to get a little bit threatening once more and rain drizzled lightly on several occasions. After the first half of the sports, the houses were in their original positions. During the intermission the Cadet Corps entertained the crowd with a military march. To me they looked like true military men and women in the U.S Army and it was an enjoyable performance indeed. The rain however started pouring down during this period. The sports officials now realizing that the weather was getting ‘’pretty ugly’’ decided to speed up the events and before I knew it the sports meet was over. Nevertheless, the crowd was pumped during the relays. The students in the stands were jumping, chanting songs and cheering on the athletes. Some of them did not even care if their house was winning the relays or not; they jumped and cheered anyway. It was like a carnival in that stands down at Fond Recreation Ground and everyone was having fun. It was during that short space of time the pavilion soon began swarming with many spectators and students and the sports started to become very energetic. Before the last two events were run, the rain came pouring down once more but that did not stop the celebrations in the stands. I’m certain if you ask any student present at sports meet which team won which specific relay no one could say since they were more focused on enjoying themselves rather than what was actually taking place on the field. Friday House emerged victorious with 557 points, Taylor House placed second with 509.5 points, Nyack House placed third with 408.5 points and Wright House fourth with 288 points. The Victor Ludorum was Rakheim Toussaint who amassed 23 points; he was also the sub-junior champ in the male division. The Victrix Ludorum was Andella hypolite who amassed 20 points; she was also prep girls’ champion. Other champions were Daniel rush (Junior Boys), Akid Thomas (senior Boys), Dwayne Paul (Prep Boys), Nikeisha Phillip (subjunior girls), Ariel St. John (Junior Girls) and Marva Mark (Senior Girls). According to Director of the sports meet and Vice Principal, Carl Andall, staging the 2012 sports meet was challenging due to the inclement weather. For the first time, the sports meet was postponed on two occasions. This, Andall, believes affected the focus of the students and the crowd support. Nevertheless, he believes that the sports meet was successful.
