GRENADA AND THAILAND DISCUSS INVESTMENT
Tillman Thomas this morning welcomed Ambassador of Thailand to Grenada, H.E. Udomphol Ninmad to his Botanical Gardens office. The Prime Minister and the Thai Ambassador discussed the recently concluded Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, which Prime Minister Thomas described as an “opportunity to strengthen cooperation in the region.” Both the Prime Minister and the Ambassador expressed the need for further strengthening of bilateral relations, within the scope of south-south cooperation, including the potential for training in areas of Aquaculture. He committed to seek an increase in training opportunities for Grenada from Bankok. Prime Minister Thomas also welcomed the possibility of deepening trade and investment ties between the two countries, highlighting Grenada’s strengths in the production of nutmeg and spices, which are imported by the Kingdom of Thailand. The Prime Minister was also receptive to the Ambassador’s interest in Grenada’s fishing industry, which he said has opportunities for investment. “The area of fish and fish processing are important to us. Our government’s focus is adding value to our raw material and we have the potential to increase our export of fish products. With the necessary investment and assistance, we can see greater returns to our fishermen and entrepreneurs,” the Prime Minister said, pointing to the development by Grenada’s Southern Fishermen’s Association smoked fish product branded as “Bacon of the Sea”. Both the Prime Minister and the Ambassador spoke favourably of organising a trade and investment mission from Thailand to Grenada, as well as Grenadian businessmen visiting Thailand. The Ambassador requested Grenada’s support for the Kingdom of Thailand’s re-election to the Human Rights Council for the term 2015-2017 and that country’s bid for election to the United Nations Security Council for the term 2017-2018.
