RESUMPTION OF SCHOOL-BASED DENTAL PROGRAM |

More than 22,000 Grenadian children will continue to receive oral care with the resumption the Ministry of Health school-based dental program.
The program which is in its second year resumed yesterday May 14, 2012, with school visits by a team of Grenadian and American dentist and dental auxiliaries headed by Grenadian doctor, Jerome Keens-Douglas.
The main focus over the next few days will be to re-examine, fluoridate and re-vanished the children’s teeth.
In addition to providing free oral healthcare, the programme also focuses on increasing oral hygiene awareness. On Tuesday, May 19, in excess of 5000 bookmarks/stickers were distributed to children - items which carry catchy, positive oral hygiene messages.
According to the Ministry’s statistics, a record breaking 22,100 school children and 1500 adults, had received professional dental care and attention at the start of the program in February 2011.
Meanwhile Health and Family Life Coordinator – in the Ministry of Education, Hermione Baptiste, after assessing the first phase of the program, says the quality of service and training imparted on the children will last a life time.
A number of teachers and healthcare providers at various levels were also trained how to teach children basic oral hygiene, flossing and proper tooth brushing techniques.
A short documentary highlighting the successes of year one of the program has been prepared by the Ministry’s communication’s unit. It will begin airing on local television this month. |
