Grenada’s Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Tillman Thomas, returns home this evening after attending the second Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Mexico Summit in Barbados.
The one day summit, which was the first international meeting attended by the Prime Minister since assuming the portfolio of Foreign Affairs last week, focused on Trade, Investment, Tourism and Cooperation between CARICOM and Mexico.
Grenada already enjoys excellent bilateral relations with Mexico, which has provided significant training opportunities, in the form of scholarships for Grenadian students.
Prime Minister Thomas and his CARICOM colleagues lobbied Mexican President Felipe Calderon to advocate for the reform of the International Financial Institutions when 20 of the world’s largest economies (G20) meet in Mexico in June.
The Grenadian leader has consistently called for the reform of the international monetary system to assist small states cushion the impact of the challenges associated with the new emerging global environment, particularly in view of the collapse of the global economy in 2008.
In a recent address to the United Nations the Prime Minister told world leaders, “it is my government’s position that while the world has changed drastically over the years, old financial rules of accessing financing have remained, thus placing the developing countries, as borrowers, at a significant disadvantage,”
In the absence of Prime Minister Thomas, Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Hon. Denis Michael Lett, was appointed to act in the position.
