GRENADA PREPARES TO HOST UNEP TRAINING COURSE ON OCEAN ...
Grenada will host the Ninth Annual Course on Multilateral Environmental Agreements is organized by the Ministry of the Environment in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).a two-week training course on Ocean Governance in August. Grenada is the first country in the western hemisphere to host the two-week course which provides a forum for negotiators to discuss international environmental laws on Ocean Governance. Professor Tuomas Kuokkanen, a representative from the University of Eastern Finland, visited Grenada recently on a scoping mission and held discussions with Ministry of Environment officials. The professor also toured various marine sites in preparation for planned excursions by the delegates attending the August course. Grenada is the ideal place to have this course, said the professor, since it will not only be a classroom setting but one with real-life demonstration on oceans. Mr Kuokanen said, “I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen. The idea is to choose such sites that will be linked to the theme and we have seen many appropriate sites.’’ Sites visited included the Underwater Sculpture Park at the Molinere/Beausejour Marine Protected Area, Levera National Park and Bathway Beach. The mangrove nursery and bird site at Woodlands were also visited. The Ocean Governance training course will be held at the Grenada Grand Beach Hotel from August 19 –31. It’s expected to attract up to 60 delegates and facilitators from universities and international institutions, including Kwa-Zulu Natal University of South Africa. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Mr. Anslem Francis, former senior Lecturer at the University of the West Indies. As part of the information sharing, local environmental enthusiasts will be afforded the opportunity to participate in an “Open House Day” encompassing all the events of the course. There will be special presentations on Marine Biodiversity and Fisheries Governance. Public forums are also planned for Grenada and Carriacou. The Ministry of the Environment, Foreign Trade and Export Development is pleased to be associated with this prestigious international event.
