Remarks by Hon. Tillman Thomas at the Handing over Ceremony of the Chinese Low Income Housing Project to the Government of Grenada from the Peoples Republic of China 24th AUGUST, 2012 I am extremely pleased to be present here today and to participate in yet another manifestation of the fruitfulness of the relationship between Grenada and the People’s Republic of China. On January 20, 2005, Grenada re-established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China. In so doing, it joined the vast majority of countries around the world which have embraced the One China Policy. I assure you, Excellency, that Grenada is indeed committed to maintaining this policy. This redounds well for the people of Grenada as the People’s Republic of China has readily extended hands of friendship. Since 2005, technical cooperation activities are progressing smoothly in several areas mainly Education and training, Agriculture and other aspects of economic assistance and support. It is heartening that today we gather here to receive, from our bilateral partner, three hundred and fifty three housing units for low income families. What we see before us is an indication of the harmonious relationship between our two countries. Indeed, this project is the result of the hard work and commitment of technical teams on both sides in ensuring that the units are designed for the needs of the typical Grenadian family. Ladies and Gentlemen, my Government is committed to ensuring that the housing situation in the country, especially post Hurricane Ivan, is adequately addressed. Separate and apart from this project, the Ministry of Housing is engaged in a number of initiatives aimed at assisting vulnerable Grenadians with this very basic need. I am aware that the number of applications already submitted for these units have far exceeded what is available. In this regard, my Government will ensure, through the Ministry of Housing, that a very transparent selection process is undertaken in order that these units are received by families that meet the stipulated criteria. Ladies and Gentlemen, in keeping with my Government’s commitment to the ideals of good governance please allow me to commend the former administration for initially negotiating this project. Here, allow me to also commend the hard work of the Chinese construction workers as well as the Grenadian contractors who worked on this project. Certainly, what we see before us is evidence of your skill and craftsmanship. Indeed, an important aspect in the development of bilateral relations is people-to-people contact. I am assured therefore, that the collaboration that characterized the implementation of this project has served to enhance our relationship. It has also strengthened and promoted the mutual understanding of our two cultures. Indeed, the future of Grenada-China relations, as evidence by the warm and fraternal ties between our Governments and people will continue to grow. Vice Minister Li, through you, I convey Grenada’s pleasure at receiving this gift from our friend and development partner - the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China. The 353 units we receive here today is a generous gift. I therefore, admonish the families who will be fortunate to occupy these units to do so with utmost gratitude and at the same time ensure that a high degree of integrity is maintained in all three communities. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Ambassador, I assure you that Grenada values greatly this contribution by the Peoples Republic of China. We are reassured that against the back drop of the friendly relations and mutual respect, along with the excellent cooperative spirit which now exists, relations between Grenada and the People’s Republic of China will grow from strength to strength. It is fitting, therefore, to express our gratitude to you Vice Minister Li, your Government and People for your selfless support, and to wish you continued economic growth and social progress. Excellency, once again I welcome you and your delegation to Grenada and I wish you safe journey to you next destination. Moreover, I invite the team to enjoy the beauty of this country and experience the warmth of its people. I Thank You.

Good morning dear Pastor please be assured that i am Gabe and not as you quote (who ever i am )you know my style so dont pretend otherwise ,and please re-read my last posting concerning your previous posting asking why these low income housing projects are not being handed over now to thoes in urgent needs, and my reply to you,and having now read your latest posting i am suprised that you choose to attack me in the way you do, Pastor please read my post again and for the record like you i am all in favour of thoes who are in greatest and most urgent needs of these houses should be given and again i say not on a party colour basis ,also the need of the receiver should be paramount at all times and Pastor please note thats where Gabe is coming from with no axe to grind.

Good afternoon Gabe or whoever you be. You have failed again to recognize a simple point. There is a process established by the Government to distribute the units. A committee is in place to follow the dictates of the Government, and for your information I am not a member of that committee. That being said, the Chinese have completed the major works on the buildings a long time ago. The handing over ceremony should have at least give access to the beneficiaries of the facilities as was the case with the Cricket Stadium. If the Government is serious about their claim of making available homes to the people who are in desperate need of them, why are they not giving it to them now? I take your point of the need for transparency, you should speak directly to the PM on that. If the units are ready, when will they distribute them? Another thing Gabe or whoever you be, if you are talking now of ensuring that the process of selecting families should be done carefully to ensure that the people who really need the units gets it. Man like you not working with a plan. The facilities were under construction for over 12 months. You will agree with me that this was more than enough time to select from the applications received the most suitable families. Or maybe you have another motive for selecting the recipients at this time.

Morning Pastor Garraway sir in response to your question quote when will these houses be handed over to thoes who needs it and i hope that although as you say the PM did not say so ,i do hope that you and others will give due respect to the process of transparency in the selection process and qualifications as defined to meet the needs of families that meets the stipulated criteria and not on the basis of who one votes for and by applying these measures one can be sure we hope and pray that accountability and transparency will be the norm of the day and in the open for all to see. one love

The Prime Minister's speech is incomplete for he failed to announce when the people of Grenada will get the opportunity to occupy the units.
