PREMATURE DEATHS FROM FOUR NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Health Officials Analyzes strategy to reduce premature deaths from Four Non-Communicable diseases.. ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 – Health authorities from the Americas are analyzing a strategy for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases that strives to reduce premature mortality from four major CNCD related diseases. The four major health disorder of concern to policy makers are cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases; which they are hoping can be reduced by at least 25% by the year 2025. The decision to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the strategy was reached by members at the 28th Pan American Sanitary Conference, currently underway at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization in Washington DC - USA. Discussions to that effect are being presided over by Grenada’s Health Minister, Ann Peters who was elected President of the 28th Pan American Sanitary Conference on Monday. Peters who is attending the high level meeting together with Chief Medical Officer Dr. George Mitchell, at the start of the meeting indicated that the Caribbean region has led the charge on CNCD. On September 6 and 7 the Ministry of Health held a workshop aimed formulating a national policy and multi-sectoral action plan, to guide and effectively manage Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases in Grenada. That workshop was facilitated by Professor Vivian Lin and Dr. Tomo Kanda, from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
