NEW MOTHERS BEING ENCOURAGED TO BREASTFEED EXCLUSIVELY
As the Food and Nutrition Council rolls out its breastfeeding public awareness campaign, new mothers are being encouraged to exclusively breast feed their babies for the first 6 months. According to Christina Hinds, Communications officer for the Council, research proves that breast milk has all the necessary antibodies to ward off diseases such as obesity, diabetes asthma and ear infections in babies. Hinds said overfeeding babies with formula can give them nutrients that their bodies do not yet need. Importantly, she notes that this can affect their kidneys, hence the push for breastfeeding awareness. Another side effect that may result from non- exclusive breast feeding is stunted growth in children and for this Ms. Hinds says that “there is no reason for a mother to say that they can’t or don’t want to breast feed. Another positive, is that breastfeeding is much more economical. The Food and Nutrition Council started the beast feeding campaign November 16 and it will run until November 30. Nutrition officers are doing prenatal sessions throughout the tri-island state. Hinds said, it is the hope that parents would make the best decision to breast feed. Soruce: gov.gd
