FOOTBALL: GRENADA GIVE GUYANA 5-0 DRUBBING

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA: The self style Spice Boyz Grenada football team started their world cup qualifying campaign with a satisfactory 5-0 drubbing of Guyana in front of a passionate crowd of home supporters Saturday night. While getting to Germany in two years is hardly a realistic goal at this time, the short-term prize is the setting up their biggest day in soccer when they meet the United States in June. But first, the team has to go to Guyana in two weeks for the return game. Guyana must now win by six clear goals to ensure that they rather than Grenada will meet the US. While Guyana appeared a better side than Saturday's 5-0 margin suggests, they are definitely not that good to make such a comeback. The Grenadians went into the game weary about the small but skilful Guyanese who only recently defeated Barbados 2-0 in a friendly -- the same team Grenada failed to pass twice this year. Going for Grenada this time though was a crop of foreign-based players who lent a decisive edge to the attack. In previous warm-up matches, the Grenadians were bedeviled by poor finishing, even though the opportunities were created. On Saturday night, the main headache was an obvious weakness at midfield, but the attack was both hungry and sharp. Grenada was always in control of the game, but it was not until the 41st minute that they opened the scoring. After that the floodgates were opened. The first strike came from Nigel Bishop, and then three minutes later Kennedy Phillip ran through the defense and banged a bullet on the upper right hand corner of the goal. The half ended 2-0, but there was more home joy after the break. To loud cheers Guyana's goal-keeper Marlon Hendricks was sent off early on the resumption after he brought down Ricky Charles who was headed to goal way ahead of all the defense. The resulting free kick taken just outside of the area was spectacularly parried out of goal. Nixon Modeste converted from the corner, and the night was sealed by goals from Anthony Augustine and Dennis Rennie, both of whom came off the bench. There is a real possibility that Grenada will be further strengthened for its now-more-than-likely June encounter with the Americans. Jason Roberts, a premiere league regular in England, is expected to join the team for the game, as are about two more players with Grenadian links playing in Europe. The Grenadians are hoping to push this current World Cup campaign as far as it can go, and there are rising hopes and passion here about the prospects. Bright yellow t-shirt emblazoned Spice Boyz have become a hot item, and top entertainer Tallpree has released the Spice Boyz theme song. If you could have believed you eyes on Saturday night, it seemed like the party had just begun. And the home supporters were determined to have fun as long as it last. SOURCE: CARIBUPDATE.COM
