PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) - West Indies collected two early wickets, one apiece to Pedro Collins and Tino Best, to bring themselves back into the second cricket Test against England on the second day before unseasonal showers soaked Queen's Park Oval on Saturday and foiled their plans. When the first and longest of the two stoppages for rain occurred about 1-1/4 hours before the lunch interval, England had their backs up against the wall on eight for two, replying to West Indies' first innings total of 208, but were able to wriggle free from the noose late in the day. Left-hander Mark Butcher, not out on 25, and former England captain Nasser Hussain, not out on 20, endured a testing period from the West Indies fast bowlers in favourable conditions and added 46, unbroken, for the third wicket to lift the visitors from the rubble. Butcher, however, was fortunate. He was 20 when Shivnarine Chanderpaul dropped a straightforward chance at second slip off Corey Collymore and batted through nearly 90 minutes with Hussain to keep the hungry West Indies bowlers at bay. Collins made the breakthrough when he had current England captain Michael Vaughan palpably adjudged lbw for nought and Best added left-hander Marcus Trescothick caught at square leg for one. Trescothick had survived two chances when umpire Billy Bowden ruled in his favour for a catch down the legside to the keeper off Best which television replays revealed he gloved, and Dwayne Smith muffed a low catch at gully off the next ball from the same bowler. Earlier, West Indies continued from their overnight total of 189 for eight and were able to reach the psychological landmark of 200 thanks mainly to a fighting innings of 40 from Jacobs as England terror Steve Harmison finished with six wickets for 61 runs from 20.1 overs. West Indies, who have not lost a series to England on home soil since 1968, trail in the four-Test series 1-0 after losing by 10 wickets in the opening Test at Kingston.
