GRENADIAN FISHERMEN SEEK TO PROTECT RESERVES
ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada: Barbados and Venezuelan fishermen are accused of fishing illegally in the territorial waters of neighbouring Grenada. A fisheries official in Grenada is asking the Grenada government to invest in the protection of the country's marine resources so as to stop foreign fishermen from fishing in territorial waters. Speaking on a special consultation on fisheries and agriculture Mr. Paul Phillip told fishermen and government officials, "there is a serious problem involving Barbadian boats in the west as well as the Venezuelan boats in the southern part who are taking our fish thus depleting our stocks". He believes that the coastguard does not seem able to cope with the problem that is causing the fishing industry to lose million of dollars every year as a result of fishing involving foreign boats. Mr. Phillip is also asking for budgetary support in research of fishing stocks since according to him the fisheries division is not able to advise fishermen correctly in terms of direct fishing effort because they are unaware of the state of the stocks and where they are. The appeal comes on the at a time when Barbados and Trinidad authorities are engaged in what is known as the fishing war where one is accusing fishermen of the other of fishing in its territorial waters.
