ENGLAND WIN SECOND TEST VS. WEST INDIES
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - England won the second Cable & Wireless cricket Test by seven wickets at Queen's Park Oval today. The tourists, set 99 runs to beat West Indies, comfortably reached the target in just 15 overs, losing just the wicket of Nasser Hussain for 5 this morning, caught behind by Ridley Jacobs off the bowling of Adam Sanford. England opened the day on 71 for two and wrapped up the game in just 5 more overs, with Butcher and Thorpe playing some breathtaking strokes to finish the Test in a flourish of boundaries. Butcher has certianly proved a hard nut to crack so far in this series and was so again in this innings with some fantastic strokeplay contrasting markedly with his dogged knock in the first innings, which helped swing the game in England's favour. The was a fightback yesterday afternoon from West Indies when Ridley Jacobs, certainly a man in form, blasted 70 and along with Shivnarine Chanderpaul (42) gave their side a glimmer of hope but when Jacobs was dismissed by Simon Jones by a ball that bounced more than expected, a big innings was needed from the skipper. It wasn't to be, Steve Harmison, who is proving to be a thorn in Brian Lara's side in this series, trapped him LBW for 8 and the writing was on the wall. Simon Jones picked up his first 5-wicket haul in Test cricket and was ably backed up by Andy Flintoff and Matthew Hoggard who both picked up two wickets. But Man of the Match went to that man Harmison for his destructive spell on the first morning off the test (6-61) and for picking up the wicket of Lara in the secong innings. Summarised scores West Indies 208 (Chris Gayle 62, Ridley Jacobs 40, Devon Smith 35; Steve Harmison 6-61, Matthew Hoggard 1-38, Simon Jones 1-44) and 209 (Ridley Jacobs 70, Shivnarine Chanderpaul 42; Simon Jones 5-57, Andy Flintoff 2-27). England 319 (Graham Thorpe 90, Mark Butcher 61, Nasser Hussain 58, Ashley Giles 37; Pedro Collins 4-71, Tino Best 3-71, Chris Gayle 2-20) and 99-3 (Mark Butcher 47 not out; Adam Sanford 2-32, Tino Best 1-27).
