GRENADIANS GO TO THE POLLS TODAY
Polls opened at 6 a.m. and are set to close at 5 p.m. as the citizens of the tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique vote today in the country’s eight general elections since the return of parliamentary rule. Forty-five candidates from eight political parties and two independent candidates will contest the elections. The main combatants will be the ruling New National Party (NNP) led by current Prime Minister Keith Mitchell and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by Senator Nazim Burke. Both major parties have fielded 15 candidates and both have expressed confidence that they will be victorious. Other candidates represent the Grenada Empowerment Movement (GEM), The Progressive Party (TPP), The Grenada Reconnaissance Party (TGR), The Liberal Party (TLP), the Grenada Progressive Movement (GPM), the Grenada United Patriotic Movement (GUMP) . Two independent candidates, John Fletcher in St. Andrew Southwest and former NNP minister Joslyn Whiteman in St. David have also tossed their hats in the ring. The Parliamentary Elections Office has designated 237 polling stations on the mainland and 17 on Carriacou. Members of the Caricom Election Observer Mission will observe the Election Day process.
