ST. GEORGE‘S, Grenada: A meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on Cricket will be convened in St. George’s, Grenada, on Wednesday, April 7. The Committee, which is chaired by Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, was reconstituted at the recently concluded Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government to comprise all countries that have offered bids for hosting the Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007. According to a release from the Prime Minister's office to date, countries that have submitted bids include Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. In addition to preparations for CWC 2007, Prime Minister Mitchell said that the Sub-Committee will begin to address the way forward for the restructuring of West Indies Cricket. “Our problem is not talent, it is the system,” the Prime Minister said, adding that “the system is being exposed for not providing the kind of developmental programmes required for players at the Test level.” Meanwhile, the Grenada Cricket Classics has received a donation of $27,000 from the Stanford Caribbean Investment Fund. The donation was presented to Mr. Allan Lamb, director of Grenada Sports Ltd., by Mr. Royston Hopkin and Mr. Michael McIntyre, Grenada’s representatives on the Fund, during a media briefing on Tuesday. In making the presentation Mr. Hopkins said the Grenada Cricket Classics is a welcome addition to the Country’s tourism product. He also noted that hotel bookings in Grenada are almost full for the upcoming One Day International on April 28 between the West Indies and England. The Grenada Cricket Classics, which were held at the National Stadium on March 26 and 27, featured former Test players from the West Indies and England playing in two limited overs matches. England won the first match, while the West Indies won the second match. Mr. Lamb said one of the biggest attractions for the Classics was having all the famous West Indies players together for the series. More than 2,000 spectators attended the Friday match, while some 6,000 attended on Saturday. More than 600 tourists from England came to Grenada for the Classics. “This donation is a great help for the Classics to grow,” Mr. Lamb said. The inaugural Grenada Cricket Classic was organised by Grenada Sports Ltd. in collaboration with Signature Communications, the Ministry of Sports and the Grenada Board of Tourism.
