GRENADIANS SUPPORT COVID_XXZ45ZYY_19 VACCINATION PROGRA...
More than 1,200 frontline workers have been vaccinated since Grenada launched its National Vaccination Programme on February 12. The first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine was received by Prime Minister Dr. Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, in a public show of support for the programme. During the first week of the campaign, three hundred and ninety four health workers were vaccinated. This week, the Ministry of Health is engaged in a mass vaccination drive at the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort Convention Center, targeting frontline workers including certified hotel employees, taxi operators, airport workers, immigration and customs officers, low enforcement officers and media workers. On Wednesday, the Health team will undertake a similar drive in Carriacou, for law enforcement officers, health wardens and contact tracers, port/dock workers - airport workers, and hotel and guest house employees, among others. Health and Social Security Minister, Honourable Nickolas Steele said by the start of Government’s weekly Post Cabinet press briefing on Tuesday, more than 100 workers were vaccinated. That number rose to more than 600 by the end of the day, Tuesday. He said, “We ended last week having dedicated the entire week for our frontline workers to have access to the vaccinations and VIPs. We ended the week with three hundred and ninety four vaccines been administered. We ended yesterday, just Monday alone with six hundred and forty nine in total. From Monday morning the vaccination was offered to frontline hospitality workers and there has been significant uptake from them.” Grenadians who are 65 years and older, are next in line to be vaccinated. Minister Steele said going forward, fixed vaccination sites will be established throughout the island, to expedite the process. However, he noted that the approach for the elderly will be a bit different, and will involve visiting some homes. Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Francis Martin said the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme will be extended to residents at the senior citizen homes, through the public health programme. He said, “That is part of the plan going forward. We recognise that’s an at risk age group and because of mobility issues, our public health professionals who usually go out to the district in any event, will be going to the homes to get those done.” While the Ministry has prioritised its first vaccination target group, ‘at risk’ family members of frontline workers who are interested in taking the vaccine, will not be turned down. Beginning next week Grenadians will be able to pre-register online for the vaccine. This will assist the Ministry of Health in formulating a schedule to ensure the effective execution of the programme.
