GRENADIAN CALYPSONIAN FACES RAPE CHARGE
Grenada’s reigning Calypso monarch, Biko Lewis, appeared at the Sauteurs Magistrate Court yesterday where he was formally charged and cautioned for the offense of rape. The 24 year old calypsonian, who resides in the Parish of St. Patrick, is accused of raping a fifteen year old girl from the same parish. It is alleged that he offered the young girl a ride in his vehicle (sometime over the last weekend) and did not drop her off at her intended destination but instead proceeded to a remote location where the act was committed.

i must say that this age of sexual consent is a guessing game..guessing because we assume that at a certain young people would be able to make decisions for themselves.i think we all know that some 15 year olds are more mature than 30 year olds.and we also know there are 30 year olds that are very childish.and we also know that 9 and 10 year olds are children, regardless how mature they might seem.that is why i think a 15 year old has some responsibility when certain things happen.we cannot just say that she is young and she is automatically the victim.lets look at the big picture,if this guy raped her, then he is wrong, and must be punished.if she gave consensual sex then they both have questions to answer.for him,why at his age he is attracted to this young lady.for her,why accept the ride and why associate with someone very much older than she is.and that is where parents come in to monitor their childrens behavior.

Mr Clean, Your vengeful attempt to close the book before reading the last chapter is laughable. How do you know she was assaulted? How do you know she was abused? How do you even know she was a victim? The thing is- you don’t know and you are a coward to admit it. You are already assuming she is a victim. You are assuming she was abused. You have the idealistic and foolish perception that 15 yr olds can’t and won’t lie. So if she said it then it must be true. That is nothing but a fantasy so go ahead and fantasize. Absolutely we have to protect the kids-absolutely we have to prevent abuse. But in this case there is no evidence so far to suggest that she was even a victim. However, your stubborn insistence not to open your eyes to reality is an absolute sign of backward thinking. The case I make about consent is quite clear. These days you cannot stop a 15 yr old from doing what she wants to do. Do you know the kind of relationship some of these teenage girls have with older men? Some of them in their 40’s and 30’s? Yes it is the responsibility of the adult to have some basic understanding of moral attitudes and norms but onus must also be on the child to have some level of self-respect and sexual constraint. She is old enough at 15 to understand those ideas. Even more so the parents should take some onus as well. You cannot allow your 15 yr old daughter to go to brass and glow late at night and come back anytime after and then say “ she too young to give consent.” What if the young girl is the one who told Biko to drive to that remote location and then herself initiated sexual advances? Shouldn’t that young girl have some self respect and sexual constraint too? What is astounding to me is your lack of understanding that there are always two sides to every story. This is not an attempt at spin but an attempt show you the reality of the world we live in today. Do not bury your head in the sand-Do not be stubborn and ignorant. Open your eyes because your 17 yr old sister might decide to get involved with a 40 yr old man and at that point you will be useless to do anything about it.

Kevin, the children can go to brass and glow,do you want to rape them for that.If he is convicted for the crime hang him, send a message for these perverts.I am more in touch than you will ever be.You said you know the guy and he will not do that. You also attack the victim that is the reason i wrote what i wrote. Here in Grenada we have to look out for the kids and speak up when they are been abused.I have young sisters and will not some pervert to assault them.So please Stop you spin and stop talking on both sides of your mouth.

Mr. Clean seems to me to be a psychedelic epithet from a long lost generation. This is not the 1950’s and 60’s where young girls had respect for themselves and had sexual constraint. This is largely to do with negative cultural influences and neglect of their own parents. Times are different today. At 15 these young women seem to have a mind of their own. I do agree that at a certain age a young girl cannot be independent minded to give consent and that Biko as the adult should be responsible enough to resist the advances of a minor. But 15 is not that age, 13 sure, 12 of course. I am not arguing what I think the law should be because the law in Grenada is vague and non-specific. It is quite clear that you yourself are not aware of that reality since you seem to be loosely using the word underage- without being specific. No one would be foolish enough to contend that a 15 yr old cannot give consent to anything or cannot make up her mind on her own. If at 15 their parents allow them to go to brass and glow on their own, without any curfew or supervision, obviously their own parents believe in their daughters independent-mindedness to decide for themselves when to return home. Hypothetically, if the daughter were to ask for consent from her parents to have sex with an older man, even if her parents said no, don’t you believe that she would find some way to do it anyway? This is not a generalization of every parent or every daughter but it is a sign of the times. This is not “Spin” this is reality. I have seen enough of these independent-minded young girls lie to their parents when their consensual relations were discovered in order to save face saying “ he raped me” rather than admit the truth. My view has nothing to do with Biko. Infact, if it turns out that it was an act of compulsion then by all means “hang Biko in market square.” Nevertheless, we cannot jump to the conclusion without evidence that somehow this girl is a “victim” simply because of her age. That kind of thinking is ignorant and close-minded. It is a reflection of “old people thinking “old thoughts.” People who are simply out of touch with today’s culture.

i agree mr.clean.i have a young daughter 9 years old and i would protect her as best as i can.and yes grenada has had this problem for quite a few years.now by speaking about it on this forum could help put this problem on the forefront.however, far too many times figures in the public eye are set up and put through hell to clear their names.let us all go back to the basics and teach children about taking rides from strangers and associating with people that are much older than they are.let us give biko his day in court and hopefully it would be a learning lesson for all concerned.
