Strange enough, he is forgotten today by many and remembered only by a few. William Galwey Donovan was born from parents of Irish and African descent. He was a well educated and married a Depradine lady who died years after his death. I attended the funeral as a young lad. His thing was that Grenadians could govern themselves and he fought for it like hell. He had quite a temper and when he saw injustice he raised total hell. In 1883 he started his movement for the removal of Crown Colony goverment. He was nicknamed the Lion because of his temper. He saw the waste, extravagance and numerous instances of neglect in goverment which he brought to the attention of the people. He felt the White man in England thought blacks were ignorant and could not rule and he planned to show them that was not true. He always maintained we could rule and govern ourselves. He was the owner and editor of a newspaper called The Grenada People, which had the slogan-A naked freedman is better than a gilded slave-. Later in 1885 he critized a judge and was brought up for libel under an old law in which his paper was closed and shut down to shut him up. He gave Governor Sendal hell to improve conditions in the country for people of color.. In 1893 he wrote to the Secretary of State about how the Crown Colony were treating blacks/negroes.This communication was actually to set up self goverment by asking that Parochial Boards one in each parish which was set up under Governor Sendall be converted to Parish Councils. Donovan campaigned for councils with more power to be responsible for repair and maintenance of roads,public buildings, and public places within the parishes, for clean water, for sanitation,lighting and poor relief, and for the establishment of secondary schools where this was necessary.One could imagine in those days how the Englishman felt about those things for people of color.. In 1900 later some of his requests took place, though not all. After he died Marryshow took over for him. Strange enough today Marryshow got most of the credit for what he did. Hangman, I guess you still don't understand me. I do not want anyone to rule me, but I do want people who are honest to govern Grenada. How would you like to be ruled by the Antoines' or Mitchels' again or our past Governor General. These people didn't do a dam thing for Grenada. They just sucked the blood dry. Useless blood suckers. Look at our past Governor General. He charged and collected rent for staying in his own house because his official residence was destroyed. That custom needs to be done away with. These people should live in their own homes. He also set up the deal to give away our best piece of real estate to Hamilton-a race car driver-with Grenadian roots for four years exposure. Don't think money didn't pass under the table and Grenada/Treasury got nothing. Yeah Hangman I critize when I see injustice. Our past leaders have failed us terribly. We are incapable of ruling honestly. My solution is a new mix of leaders, 1 black, 1 Indian, 1, German, 1 Canadian, 1 Chinaman, 1 Taiwanese, 1 creole and 1 mix up or whatever. We have them in Grenada too. If we have a different mix with new different ideas, we may just see something in the future for Grenada. You may be surprised Hangman at who I am. We also need to start teaching in the schools. Convent girls in Grenville need to be off the streets by 6 o clock. Too many children are born out of wedlock which creates mega problems later. After high school is completed, students need to take a test to measure their ability to see what they are best suited for. I think after high school, we need to pay for our own books and materials too. We can't depend on the goverent for everything. Our parents need to take responsibility too, if we do we will appreciate our education much more and take it seriously with more effort to learn and succeed. Not all of us are going to be doctors and lawyers, some may be carpenters, mechanics, electricians and refrigeration experts, but there should be a mechanism to get them trained. We need solid ideas from guys like you Hangman,Tom and Gabe. We should get on the forum on the first page where we can really put our ideas on paper to make Grenada a healthy place. It can be done.
