NNP TOWN HALL MEETING A MAJOR SUCCESS |
|
|
Sunday, May 17, was billed as a sort of reunion for Grenadians in the New York and surrounding areas. Those attending the meeting were treated to several spirited calypsos and updates of what is happening in Grenada since the last general election.
The presentation by the former representative of youth development Emmalin Pierre was well researched and received a standing ovation. Her presentation outlined some of the accomplishments of the previous NNP government such as the port terminal, the ministerial complex and the new hospital. She concluded her presentation by informing the audience that over 2000 young people were sent home since the Imani project was discontinued by the NDC government.
Senator Kennedy Roberts’ presentation outlined some of the financial waste and lack of visionary leadership of the present government. He said that thousands of dollars are spent on first class travel by government ministers, expensive cars, and the hiring of friends and supporters. He also talked about the broken promises such as the discontinued food basket for the elderly, book vouchers and old age pension.
The Parliamentary Representative of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Elvin Nimrod presented a message that brought the audience to its feet. The former Foreign Minister talked about the New National Party’s vision and accomplishments in Carriacou and Petite Martinique. He emphasized the need for the NDC government to respect the fundamental rights of all Grenadians, respect acceptable international protocols, and respect for the Office of the Prime Minister.
Dr. the Hon. Keith C. Mitchell received several standing ovations. This visionary, charismatic and transformational leader spoke about the need for leadership, direction, civility, and responsibility. He pointed to the way the present government of Tillman Thomas handled the Imani program, the debushing (?) program, and taking away the diplomatic passport from Dr. Mitchell.
Dr. Mitchell also talked about the need for good governance, responsible financial oversight, respect for the Governor General’s office, and the Prime Minister’s office. He concluded by outlining some of the NNP projects that were discontinued, such as
• Hotel developments
• The reduction of roadworkers pay by $10 a day
• Road construction, especially in rural areas
• Stop blaming NNP and instead provide good and responsible government
Community Response to the Town Hall Meeting
The majority of Grenadians at the meeting, including supporters of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) felt that the meeting was successful. Their responses, in summary, are as follows:
• The present administration must stop the confusion that exists inside and outside the government.
• The NDC must avoid dividing families, have a vision for the country, strong and competent government
• Stop destroying projects that provide jobs for young people, be frugal when spending government resumes
• Do not continue to exploit poor people, students, investors such as Hamilton and others
• The Prime Minister should pay particular attention to his ministers who refuse to follow acceptable protocols. The Prime Minister’s office should be respected.
