GRENADA HOTEL AND TOURISM ASSOCIATION WRITES TO HON. GL...
27 November 2009 Hon. Glynis Roberts Minister for Tourism Ministry of Tourism Ministerial Complex Botanical Gardens ST. GEORGE’S Dear Minister Roberts Re: Inaugural Flight by Sunwing It is with great concern for the future of Grenada’s tourism industry that the Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association writes to express its displeasure with the treatment meted out to Sunwing Airline, on its inaugural flight into the Maurice Bishop International Airport, on Tuesday, 24 November, 2009. It is inconceivable that the aircraft should have been kept in a circling pattern, for approximately thirty minutes, while the daily runway inspection was completed. Surely with all the hype preceding this flight, someone somewhere, must have been informed of its scheduled arrival time, and one would expect that someone, would have ensured that the runway was made ready for landing thus eliminating a delay. Adding insult to injury, upon finally being allowed to land, the embarrassment to our country was compounded by the fact that there was not one single person to meet, and officially greet, the airline and its passengers which included, the island’s Consul General to Canada, Ms. Jenny Gumbs, Ramnairine Tiwari, President & CEO of Sunrise International Airways, and Niko Kosmos, Manager, Ground Operations, of Sunwing Airlines, who saw fit to grace us with their presence. In fact without the presence of a member of our oft times maligned media, who saw fit to step into the breach and welcome those on board, and later inform the nation of this historic event, even we in the industry would still be in the dark since, we had not been informed of the arrival date and time of the flight. The presence of two officials of the Grenada Board of Tourism in the Departure Lounge of the airport at the time of arrival, waiting to enjoy complimentary seats to Toronto on the return flight of the same airline, in order, we are told, to participate in scheduled tourism activities, quite clearly shows that the Board knew before hand, of the flight’s arrival. We find the reason given for the failure to afford the arrival of this flight the official welcome which was its due, on behalf of the people of Grenada, rather lame to say the least, and of even greater concern is the fact that the Chairman of the Board of the GBT had not been informed of the flight’s arrival time. If the staff of the GBT felt that, rising from their beds at such an early hour in order to meet and greet the flight was outside the realms of their capabilities, they need only have asked and they would have had many persons in the private sector offering to carry out their duties for them. We live in an age where the Government of Grenada spends a considerable amount of money for joint marketing of airlift into Grenada, or in the case of American Airlines, pay penalties should the number of passengers carried fall below a certain level, that, we should be thankful that Sunwing saw fit to service the island without asking for any compensation. We should also remember that there are many other islands that would gladly welcome such generosity with open arms. The GHTA feels most strongly that there is need to have a professional level of accountability; without this, we will continue to be seen as mediocre in an industry which requires perfection at the highest level. With power comes responsibility, and with responsibility comes accountability. We dismissed the last Attorney General for writing a letter which had no effect on the economy, and therefore we must ask ourselves what is a fitting redress for a fiasco such as the non event of this inaugural flight. Yours respectfully, Russell Fielden PRESIDENT cc Hon. Peter David Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Richard Strachan Chairman Grenada Board of Tourism Board of Directors Grenada Board of Tourism Board of Directors Grenada Hotel & Tourism Association Board of Directors Aviation Services of Grenada Ltd.

Michael, this is absolutely true. Gabe you are the missing the big picture. You are not seeing what Michael sees. For you, it is all about political games and deceit. You are not willing to admit the significance of this. Look at it another way, what if Barack Obama had decided to visit Grenada on his way to Trinidad, and there was no welcoming party or appropriate accommodations made for his airplane. How do you think that will look? What image would that leave in the mind of the US President? Do you believe he will be eager to do business with Grenada? Furthermore, you are telling me that with such a well known dignitary, visiting our shores that PM would simply leave it up to other ministers? An opportunity as grand as this for Grenada to showcase its culture? This particular situation is no different. The bottom line is the PM should not simply leave it up to other ministers when such occasions occur. He needs to call in, have daily conversations, make sure that accommodations are made way ahead of time. That is what a strong, smart, decisive leader does. This mistake is part of a pattern with this PM. First beginning with the renaming of point salines, when one minister went over to Cuba and told Cubans about the renaming of the airport, even before the people knew about it. The PM himself did not know about the minister's intentions. This is a pattern. A pattern of gross negligence and incompetence. Grenada cannot afford this now. Our people need Jobs and opportunity. There are thousands of children graduating with skills and talents and no way to put them to use. There is nothing offensive about this truth Gabe. It is offensive to you because you choose to ignore the significance of this. Here you are talking about "KCM." This is not about KCM or about politics. This is about the future of Grenada. And with fighting words I intended to speak out against this rubbish. Grenadians cant be afraid to fight for their future with vigor and tenacity.

I have read some of the writers comments and it is very evident that someone must take responsibility for such a huge mistake. Grenada is abeautiful place and we are blessed with intellegent people , it is time for those people that are elected officials take pride in their jobs and put the interest of the country first. We cannot be lazy and allow Grenada to fall behind in our development because of some selfish individuals. As one writer stated let us find out the sources of the blunders and rectify it quickly as possible so that the overall welfare of the country is not hampered. Be patriotic and help build Grenada up not tear it down.

Gabe, you seem to be entirely blinded by political vengeance and hatred. Your interest is not for the concern of Grenadians or Grenada, but for your political party. Your fixation on "KCM" is delusional. He is not the PM. In fact, when he was the PM, I was very critical of the mistakes he made. Furthermore, I am proud to say that I supported change. But this is not the change I hoped for. It seems as if we went from bad to worse. Nevertheless, this is not about politics. You have to get yourself out of the gutter and stop making irrational judgments based on party solidarity. Be a responsible Grenadian and a rationale human being and analyze the situation for what it is. This is a failure on the PM's part. He is the Chief executive of the state of Grenada, and any decision that is made, he should know about it. With such a big airline making an inaugural flight, that should have been on his list of " things to do." He should have made sure that appropriate accommodations were made for the flight. It is his responsibility. That is what a leader does. This deference to other ministers is foolish, cowardly governance. In this changing time, Grenada cant make stupid mistakes like this. We need to grasp every opportunity we get. We cant be lazy. If we are lazy, we will get left back. The train leave us! We have to be bold, brave, ambitious and decisive. These are the qualities we need in a leader, if Grenada is to aspire, build and advance. More so, this is not one mistake, but several and its barely been one year since he assumed the office. Gabe, we cant make mistakes as foolish as this one. We cant allow Grenada to fall back. We cant allow lazy, lackluster leadership. I will continue to speak out and urge all Grenadians to speak out against ANY politician in the government or the opposition that exhibit those qualities. Forward ever backward Never! Forward ever backward Never!Forward ever backward Never! Let us never forget that slogan!
