GRENADA - In a call in programme on one of the nation’s media houses last week Sunday, Sen. Chester Humphrey, the Lion of Grenada's Upper House of Parliament, voiced his opinion on the debate over Mrs. Marietta Mitchell - wife of Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Mitchell - and the incident at the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) sometime ago surrounding her diplomatic passport. Humphrey said that while he does not know the reasons why Mrs. Mitchell may not have surrendered her passport, he is of the view that the wife of the Leader of the Opposition, including the Leader of the Opposition himself, ought to have a travel document the equivalent of a diplomatic passport – whether it be a diplomatic passport or an equivalent travel instrument - by virtue of the office that he occupies. Sen. Humphrey said that he thinks it is time for Grenadians to ‘grow- up’ and realize that Dr. Mitchell occupies a very important constitutional office as the Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition and he has to be treated with the decorum, graces and facilities that goes along with the office, and likewise his wife. He said he will like to see an end to this ‘petty-minded vindictiveness’ in Grenadian politics. He said he will try to get the Privileges Committee convened because he thinks that all members of Parliament should hold travel documents other than their regular passports and that the Leader of the Opposition, in particular, should hold a travel document equal in status to that of the Prime Minister.

The Hon. Sen Humphrey needs to grow up. There is now reason why Mrs Mitchell should need this document. I have no problem with Dr Mitchell having the passport.
