ADDRESS TO THE NATION BY PRIME MINISTER HON. TILLMAN TH...
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, GOOD EVENING, Many of you would know that service to the people of Grenada is the most important value in my public life. My firm belief in high ethical standards, honesty, integrity and accountability, and living those values are my guiding principles. It is for those reasons that I spent years in jail, refusing to compromise those values. It is for those reasons that I embraced everyone in the spirit of reconciliation and genuine inclusiveness. This I firmly believe was, and remains in the best interest of uniting Grenada. Having the opportunity to lead this government as part of a team which advocated the good governance agenda, places upon me an honourable duty to act in the public interest at all times. For me, it is always about people, not power. The members of my government must also be clear as to the importance of this standard of personal responsibility. One requirement of that obligation is to combat wrong-doing regardless of who is responsible. Fellow Grenadians, As Prime Minister, I have been careful to act with fairness and even-handedness in dealing with violations of the public trust, by members of my Government. When former members of my government crossed a particular line in the past, I acted accordingly and will consistently do so. I give you the assurance that just as I have treated with my own government colleagues, so too, I am resolved to fight wrong-doing by those in the previous administration as the evidence would justify. And WHO can honestly say that I am wrong for fighting wrong doing? Today, I advised His Excellency the Governor-General to revoke the appointment of the Hon. Joseph Gilbert as a Minister of Government. This action was taken in the public interest and in order to preserve the integrity of the Government of Grenada and to maintain the highest standards of Cabinet decision - making. The factual basis for this action, is irrefutable documented evidence, in writing, before me. It is established that the Hon. Joseph Gilbert, in his capacity as Minister for Works, on August 23rd, 2011, wrote to a foreign company, Harbour Holdings Limited, regarding a project known as the Ocean Crest Gaming Project. In that letter, the Minister represented to the Company that the Government of Grenada proposed to amend existing legislation pertaining to Gaming. The Minister gave the company the assurance that it would be issued a licence to operate a gaming facility on lot 8 at the Cruise Port in St. Georges and encouraged the company to proceed to finalize its financing arrangements for the purchase of Lot 8 in light of the pending license approval. These representations by the Minister were made in full knowledge that Cabinet had not taken any such decisions. Furthermore, the Minister did not seek Cabinet’s approval for his actions, nor did he inform the Cabinet of what he had done in its name in an important area of public interest. In this respect, the Minister must have been aware that his conduct was wrongful or was otherwise unconcerned as to his responsibility to the Cabinet. Ladies and gentlemen, such behaviour is not only highly irresponsible but disrespectful and abusive of the process of Cabinet. It is indefensible and cannot be condoned by this Government and should not be condoned by any other Government. It must be clearly understood by all, that this matter is not about the survival and stability of the duly elected Government of Grenada but about preserving our core values and building of a sustainable country. In fact, Mr. Gilbert’s actions, along with the demonstration of poor judgment surrounding it, must strike every citizen as being totally unacceptable on the part of a Minister of Government. As the leader of this nation, I am deeply concerned that the Minister’s inexplicable contravention of Cabinet’s authority has seriously compromised the Government of Grenada, and may well lead to significant damaging consequences. It is my responsibility to protect this nation from harmful consequences and I shall do so with all of the authority given to me as Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Fellow Grenadians, I take this opportunity, to comment briefly on matters of public interest concerning the National Democratic Congress, of which I am the Political Leader. It is clear to me, that all in the leadership of our Party have a responsibility to the People of Grenada; including and especially, those tens of thousands who share our values, who sacrificed and who worked hard to remove the last administration. These are the people to whom we owe a debt of gratitude and to whom we owe an obligation never to return to the corrupt practices of the former regime. It is you the people who by voting for the NDC, have put in place a government you trusted would serve all the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique with honour and integrity. I am convinced, that words and phrases like conspiracy, division, and ‘Party-within-a-Party’ are not consistent with the NDC BRAND that the people of Grenada have known and loved. Our Party has healed itself in the past and it is our duty to do all that is necessary to ensure that the NDC remains vibrant, powerful and capable of serving the people of Grenada for a very long time to come. We in the National Democratic Congress, like any other Party, would have to deal with the issue of succession at the right time. In this regard, I believe that all of us, members of the NDC, as well as our faithful supporters, would be comfortable with a scheduled, democratic and transparent process of change when the need arises. Ladies and Gentlemen The times are indeed challenging and difficult. However we have been weathering the storm relatively and comparatively well. We are doing much better than many of our neighbours. Our continued progress requires that all Grenadians work together to ride the turbulent waves. This is not the time for division and fragmentation. This is not the time for pursuing individual agendas. It is the time for collective nation-building. It is a time for greater commitment, greater sensitivity and caring and most of all a recognition that God is in control. We must give thanks for our many Blessings. In closing, I give the public the assurance that my Government will move speedily beyond this unfortunate issue. We will continue to fulfill our mandate to govern in accordance with the principles of good governance and the provisions and conventions of the Constitution of Grenada. Only this week, the House of Representatives approved a Motion putting into operation the Integrity in Public Life Legislation. The onus is on all Parliamentarians, in particular, and by way of example, to live up to its provisions. Finally, I invite you all to join with me in taking a stand against wrong-doing in public life. We must do so in order to preserve the fabric of our society and to establish for our leaders, clear standards that our children would be proud to emulate. I Thank You and May God Continue to Bless our Nation.

ADDRESS TO THE NATION BY PRIME MINISTER HON. TILLMAN TH...

Thanks Littleboy, at least I learn something new from you and I support your suggestion. As I stated earlier, The P.M should protest that decision with the support of the people. Karen, I respect your views but do I need to agree with everything you stated? Come on sister this is freedom of speech. The decision to free Coard and his gang was made by the Prevy Council. Am I incorrect? Or am I the one who gave those big shots all this power? I understand The Observer's reasoning about Independence that I always refer to as (so-called Independence)and agree that it's a joke. Grenada is not fully Independent if a few Colonial masters and maybe mistresses make very important and painful decisions for us. However I don't bother about intellectuals because they are usually the biggest screw-ups. Intellectuals are mainly responsible for Grenada's present situation. They are the ones who have the Privy Council riding our little Island. Finally, we can agree to disagree and not become disagreeable. All the best to you guys and most of all Grenada.

Joe, yes, I support The Observer in his views regarding the state of things in our beloved country. The guy is not unfairly criticizing our prime minister. He addresses issues that a lot of us should be questioning and concern about. If Observer does not ask the hard questions, can you tell me who would? I admire the fact that Observer is brave enough to go after Tillman Thomas, Keith Mitchell without any biases. He attacks any and everyone he believes is corrupting the political establishment here in Grenada. Joe, if you come on GC and cannot contribute to the what is argued, then don't discourage those who are trying to change things for the better.

Joe, while on the subject, I ask that you not respond to me unless you can clearly and without doubt explain what it means when we say Grenada is an independent state. And if you're right, please explain why the head of state does not have a say in his country's legal rulings...When would we lazy, do for me what I can do for myself Grenadians wake up and understand what the hell is happening around them?

Joe the laws about the Privy Council can be changed. All Tillman Thomas needs to do is take it to the PEOPLE OF GRENADA for a referendum - a special vote by the people- concerning control of the direct hanging law by Grenada and not THE PRIVY COUNCIL. I say we need to change that and go retro-active and clean house all the way. I am for it and I'm sure Grenadians are so disgusted that they are also for it. I know my friend Gabe wants all the criminals alive but e doe want to feed dem

jahlion, I applaud and commend you for taking such an interest in the incident. I am continuing to follow through with the story because it's the right thing to do. We have got to challenge issues like these since it's the only way of raising people's conscientiousness and effect change in the way our ministers and government employees conduct business.

Joe, I really think you should rethink and reinvestigate my argument here before you begin to answer to any of those questions. Do you really the believe the BBC and other news media to be as open and objective as you claimed to be? Firstly, Grenada is an independent state. Therefore, PM Thomas and the lazy ass public could have called for a hold on the release. Your disagreement is only showing that we are not an independent country. Tillman as the leader of the country could have called for a hold on their release. To argue with me on that is like saying a man has the right to walk into your home and sexually attack your wife. Secondly, Tillmann's support for the employment of members of the gang of 17is a clear indication that he favored the release of those thugs. What is it that you don't understand? Can't you see a co-relation between the release and employment of the gang 17...guy please begin to think outside the box...this is not the age for you to solely depend on second hand information. There is a clear association between the release employment of members of the Gang17. It's high time that people like you Joe wake up and begin to analyze what is happening. Tillman had had to be involved in the release of those thugs, which could be simply understood by his employment of Hudson Austin, Leon "Bogo" Cornwall, Cecil Prime, etc. In reference to Keith Mitchell: let it be known that I am fully aware of his involvement with the Gang 17. Yes, he freed Phyllis Coard and had many interactions with Coard and others of the Gang 17. I hold him just as responsible for not protesting and going after the British and Tillman Thomas. Grenada will forever be the way it is because we as a people have no bloody idea who we are, hence we came, where we are at and where we're going. Joe, I caution you to be careful when criticizing my views. I will intellectually attack you just as well if you too should attempt to covertly silence the voice of social change and justice.

Karen and The Observer, you guys should know very well that the Don't care darn Prevy Council in London made the unfortunate decision to free the KILLERS" However you continue to mis-inform the public stating that P.M Tilman Thomas was part of it. Thats false. In this 21st. Century we have the opportunity to research almost any conceivable topic on the internet. We also have the luxury of chosing reasonable sources but you two continue to put out false information. Tillman Thomas did not had any say in freeing those thugs. Please have a look at BBC news.com, the USA today, Caribbean 360.com, Stabroek News, the Jamaican Gleaner and many more sources if you really need information on that topic. The P.M is also not responsible for puting Grenada at the mercy or no-mercy of the Imperial Masters, Prevy Council. He or Keith haven't the power to fight them. It would have been nice if the Grenada Administration with the support of the people protested the decision and raised hell but would you two had supported that move? It is correct to say that Keith Mitchell and his N.N.P freed Phyllis Coard because that was not the decision of the Colonial Masters. I am truly disappointed with you two adults. Are you simply trying to score political points in favour of (Her Majesty's? Opposition)? Or are you two just mis-informed? I agree that the KILLERS should not be freed or employed. Employing those scum-bags was terrible move to my opinion. Yes I understand that you two have the right to your opinion but that does not mean putting out wrong information. Please do better next time.

Observer: Again, I will follow up more on this. I spoke to folks at Carlton about this with direct responsibility for propagation and distribution of cocoa and they denied it. My own experience from buying is that Mirabeau does not sell cocoa plants. But I'll inquire further and report my findings. There is always as shortage of plants, so for this to occur, if it did, is unjust.
