GOVERNMENT FULFILLS MAJOR COMMITMENT TO GRENADIAN STUDE...
ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, APRIL 2nd, 2012 _ A major commitment by Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas to the people of St. Patrick and Carriacou will be fulfilled on Wednesday 4th April, 2012, when the T. A. Marryshow Community College launches its video conference facility to three campus locations. The new facility is a contribution by the board of the Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (CKLN) to the government and people of Grenada that will propel in a new era of how education is delivered to TAMCC students living in St. Patrick and Grenada. This network will allow students at the St. Patrick and Carriacou Campuses of the TAMCC to participate in classes and interact with teachers at the Tanteen Campus of the College in real time. The Prime Minister said that the video conference facility is a very important development for the people of northern Grenada and Carriacou, “because it means that they will save on transport and other expenses they would have to undertake if they had to commute every day. This is especially important for the parents and young people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique,” the Prime Minister said. The funding for this project, worth EC$393,228, is provided by the European Union as part of the Euro10.00 million grant to the Caribbean for developing a regional network called C@ribNET, connecting all CARICOM member States. The development is a culmination of a consistent campaign by the Prime Minister and his administration to utilize Information Communication Technology (ICT) to provide education and other government services to the Grenadian public “wherever they live”. “I am excited that this project has finally come on stream and I look forward to the expansion of services offered by the TAMCC at the Sauteur’s and Hillsborough locations,” the Prime Minister said Friday. The launch programme will utilize the technology with audiences, including the Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Sen. Franka Alexis-Bernardine in St. Patrick, while the Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Sen. George Prime will be in Hillsborough. “This contribution of the connectivity and the provision of the equipment for this video conferencing service to Grenada is quite appropriate”, said Mr. Ken Sylvester, CEO of CKLN, as the CKLN is headquartered in St. Georges and has benefited from the hospitality and support of the Grenada government.

FORMER PRIME MINISTER RECOGNISED Former Prime Minister of Grenada, the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell was recognized for his vision placing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the centre of the development agenda for Grenada and the rest of the Caribbean. Speaking at the ceremony establishing a regional broadband network connecting all CARICOM countries, Dr. Mitchell was acknowledged for his contribution and for encouraging other CARICOM leaders to put the necessary regional mechanism in place to develop a Regional ICT strategy that will propel the Caribbean to becoming an information and knowledge society. The Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network (CKLN), is but one company born out of Dr. Mitchell’s vision. CKLN is responsible for C@ribnet, a broadband fiber optic network configured to connect, within the Caribbean, all tertiary institutions, hospitals, schools, government agencies and CARICOM institutions. The project was initiated by a US$ 6.3 Million dollar contract with LIME signed in Grenada on July 16th, 2011. C@ribnet will also connect Caribbean institutions to like institutions in Europe, USA, Latin America, Africa and Asia. The signing of this historic contract brings to fruition Dr. Mitchell’s vision of creating access and opportunity for more students in Grenada to utilize higher education opportunities their home communities do not offer.

Well well well, never a dull moment in the spice isle. You cannot feel sorry for Hon. Tillman Thomas because he is a Lawyer and should know better. But you must feel it for the people of Grenada especially the students who expect the Government to work on their behalf. well the truth is unfolding before our eyes, Hon. Thomas and his NDC by their actions have conformed that they are about the splendor of the harvest but not about the sacrifice and rigors of planting. If the previous Government (NNP) did not have the vision to plant or sow into education, Information Communication Technology, Cruise Port, School Building, Rehabilitation of Nutmeg, Cocoa and Banana fields after Hurricane Ivan and Emily there would not have been the increase in the output of these crops at this time. Yet you could hear The PM boasting of Nutmeg and Cocoa production. Now he is boasting of CKLN contributing to the enhancement of teaching in TAMCC St Patrick and Carriacou. What has he done to help develop TAMCC?
