GOVERNMENT GETS FLOORED IN PARLIAMENT
It was a real knock out blow for Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and his governmental colleagues in Parliament on Friday 20th July last. The government failed in its bid to pass the Insurance (Amendment) Bill 2012 in the House of Representatives. This phenomenon marks the first time in the history of Grenada that a government in piloting a bill through parliament was deprived of majority support when the votes were counted. The votes in favour of passing the bill was five and those against was six. The Leader of the Opposition Dr. Keith Mitchell led the way in showing that the measures which were sought in the bill would create additional financial burden on the backs of Grenadians who are already suffering under dire economic conditions. This is so he said, because whatever payments that would be extracted from Insurance companies by government, the ordinary folks in the country would be made to bear the financial burden by those companies. Dr. Mitchell was ably supported by other members of the Opposition in addition to support given by Hon. Michael Church and Hon. Karl Hood. Other members belonging to the government side such as Hon Peter David and Hon. Glynis Roberts failed to make a showing in parliament. This is surely a sign of things to come as the split in the ruling party becomes wider and wider. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that in the very near future the government would not be able to pass any money bills in parliament and this would certainly lead to a vote of no confidence in that administration. The time seems to be fast approaching when Prime Minister Thomas would have no alternative but to request the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and set a date for general elections. Grenadians deserve to be relieved of this political melee.

Hi Joe, there you go again, if you don't know what the bill say, then what are you objecting to? You have thrown a lot of accusations and derogatory comments against the MP's who did not support the bill. So then, what is the basis for your attack on them if you don't know what the bill say?

Pastor Garraway, I haven't seen the entire bill. Can you kindly educate me on the sections that the NNP and the other guys are in disagreement with? Also, what have the NNP and others propose in order to stop RAIDERS from milking poor Grenadians? The idea of having rules in place to stop CORPORATE CROOKS from STEALING the little funds that Grenadians may have is an excellent one. Instead of the Opposition and the selfish guys yapping and yapping, why can't they honestly work to improve the bill if required and tell the people what they propose? They are being paid by the same Grenadians not to be obstructionists but to work for the good of Grenada. I pray that something good is put in place to prevent those CORPORATE VAMPIRES FROM stealing from Grenada.

Littleboy and others you need to take a look at the bill itself rather than allowing others to deceive you. Your arguments here concerning the bill is inaccurate and I suggest it will serve you well if you could find the bill and read it yourself and then come back here and report the truth to the visitors of GC.

This bill was actually to stop the corruption that was initiated by the Keith Mitchel regime. Why do you think he and his party opposed it so much, all the, debts, fraud, theft, deceit, offshore bank schemes, Deborg bank schemes and corruption with all these past politicians and their big mansions came about because of Keith Mitchel, and this bill was a good way to attempt to have some accountability in respect to curbing these practices.

I totally agree. Hon. HM, Leader of the Opposition, tell us in an open forum what you and your supporters intend to do to stop those so-called businessmen and women who are just greedy and corrupt. Up to this point there is no law in place to protect the poor and less fortunate citizens. I have one suggestion. "Do something to bring to justice institutions like Demerara Life, Clico, Building and Loan Associatoon etc. who are not being made to account for poor people's money- hard-earned life-time savings"
