FINAL WEEKEND OF CAMPAIGNING IN GRENADA

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada: The Island’s general elections campaign enters its final decisive weekend in a race that is too clouded to call.
The two considered front runners, the incumbent New National Party and the National Democratic Congress stage show-of-force rallies in the city on Sunday.
The NNP holds its meeting at Tanteen and to ensure “the biggest crowd ever” – in the words of the Prime Minister – the party is offering free gas to private vehicle owners so that they can join a number of tributary motorcades on the way to the rally.
The NDC stages a day-long island-wide motorcade that goes through the east coast and comes back down on the east ending in the tourist-belt area of Grand Anse.
Unlike the NNP, NDC organizers have been appealing to likely participants to volunteer both their time and vehicles.
Observers here points to this as the fundamental difference in the two campaigns. NNP has more funds as evident in the extent of the media campaign – running about six commercials to one against all the other parties combined.
The parties are putting a lot of stakes on a big showing on Sunday, only days ahead of next Thursday’s general elections, to play largely to a regarded huge segment of undecided voters who can determine the results if they come out in force.
Both parties stage scores of smaller meetings Saturday ahead of Sunday’s expected big splash.
