POLITICAL ACTIVITY IN GRENADA AMID ALLEGATIONS AGAINST PM.

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA: It is a weekend here filled with political activity being held against the background of the bribery allegations against Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell.

The ruling New National Party on Sunday holds its General Council meeting, an activity scheduled before the scandal broke.

The opposition National Democratic Congress is also holding a rally on Sunday in St George’s, its second in a week called specifically to deal with the allegations.

NNP’s General Council is the highest decision-making body of the party outside of its annual convention, but it is hardly expect to have an open debate on the allegations.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Mitchell, there is little room for dissent, and any open reference to the allegations is expected to be a resolution expressing unqualified support for its leader.

The party is hoping to come out of the event looking solidly united after rumors abound in Grenada that some senior members of the party were grumbling about the on-going controversy and its potential to hurt the party and government.

The local media, which has angered the ruling party of its coverage of the scandal, has not been officially invited to the event, as is the tradition. But reporters say they will turn up anyway.

In its continuing attempt to rally Grenadians against the embattled government, the NDC holds a public meeting at Tanteen, just outside of the city’s main center.

However it will not be the self-styled “public trial” of Prime Minister Mitchell that the party’s senior member Nazim Burke declared last week at the first meeting in Grenville.

The issue of the allegations continues to dominate discussions here.
