GRENADA OPPOSITION TO SITE ‘FRAUD’ IN ANOTHER GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT

Citing another report recently presented in parliament, the National Democratic Congress is getting ready to raise what one source called a red flag as to possible fraud and corruption in another government department.

NDC, the considered main of three opposition parties in Grenada, has called a press conference for Monday afternoon reportedly to talk about what an internal report of a government agency itself called open fraud in the ministry of social services.

Sources who have seen the report said it suggested a number of possible fraudulent activities under government’s public assistance program.

Opposition elements here have consistently suggested that the current Keith Mitchell administration has been plagued by corruption, accusations it has consistently denied.

The government recently launched a public inquiry in allegations of misuse of government funds in the National Lottery Authority.

The government has denied any wrongdoing but bowed to pressure to set-up the inquiry.

It was a government audit report which had suggested bad procedures in the National Lottery Authority.

Another report in the Ministry of Social Affairs, a copy just obtained by CARIBUPDATE said the “audit found a lack of controls, poor monitoring and review, and a situation open to fraud.”

The report said that in many instances the procedure to get people on the program was not followed, some people’s names were on different pay-sheets and in some instances paid twice, other people whose names were on the sheets could not be located though money was paid out in their name with improper signatures.

The audit report suggests mostly administrative bungling, but observers here say the NDC at its scheduled press conference is expected to seek to make the case that this is another instance of a corrupt administration at work.
