ELECTORAL OFFICIALS DENY OPPOSITION LEADER'S CLAIMS

Officials at Grenada’s electoral office have denied claims by Opposition Leader Michael Baptiste that it has given the preliminary list of voters to the ruling party.

Baptiste was quoted in the press here this week as saying that the department had given the list to the New National Party in an attempt to give in an unfair advantage in upcoming general elections.

The opposition leader said that the ruling party had begun using the list even while opposition forces are waiting to get their hands on a copy.

But officials at Grenada’s electoral office in denying the claims said that the final preliminary list has not yet been completed since the latest registration had only ended this month.

Electoral office sources told CARIBUPDATE that they might be about a month and a half away from having such a list completed.

Baptiste has mulled over a meeting with other opposition elements to discuss the issue, but there has been little enthusiasm from other political parties about his latest claim.

One opposition political party official, who refused to go on record, said that his organization do not think Baptiste’s claim is accurate based on their own investigation.

The source said his party still remains confident about the integrity of the process.
