MP’S CITIZENSHIP STATUS VIOLATES GRENADIAN CONSTITUTION

The Grenada government has resorted to the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal to have an opposition Member of Parliament removed from parliament on the basis that he holds dual citizenship, contrary to the country's Constitution.

Last Friday, state attorneys filed an appeal against a decision handed down by a local court Tuesday that it had no jurisdiction to hear the government case brought against Peter David of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

David has been accused of holding dual citizenship, Grenadian and Canadian in violation of Grenada’s Constitution.

Earlier this year, lawyers for the Keith Mitchell government brought the case to court, saying that David was not eligible for candidacy in the 2003 general elections ad therefore his victory was now void.
