GRENADA’S OPPOSITION CHALLENGES FINANCE MINISTER ON CEMENT DEAL

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: An ongoing battle between Grenada’s Finance Minister, Anthony Boatswain, and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over cement supplies continued this week.

Boatswain is accused by the NDC of wrongdoing in relation to the local cement company Dream Builders International. But Boatswain, standing firm on the matter, stated that his government has no connection with the issue. He said that if the opposition NDC can find and provide any evidence of wrongdoing, he will resign as minister of finance.

The NDC this week said that they strongly believe that the government is involved in buying cement from Dream Builders International, a cement company that imports the product from Brazil.

Opposition MP Nazim Burke told Caribbean Net News that taxpayers' money is involved and the minister must come clean.

Defending the Government's postion, Boatswain said government has not paid one cent of taxpayers' money to purchase cement from any investor.

However, Burke said the so-called cement cannot be used in Grenada because the quality is bad and the heavy duty mixers in the country cannot use it. He said after the NDC protested government decided to push Gravel and Concrete to purchase the cement.

He said whether Gravel and Concrete is paying for the cement makes no difference, since it is owned by the government and people of Grenada it becomes taxpayers' money.

The NDC is now seeking answers to their questions as to who really owns this cement and who is reposible for the administrative cost.
