PEOPLE WINNING AGAINST NNP

LEADER of the National Democratic Congress Tillman Thomas said he is confident that the people will win against the policies of the ruling New National Party government.

While stating that this is not a time for people to let down their guard, he said the national address by Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell Monday night in which he announced that changes will be made to the controversial amendment in the education act, was the first signs of victory in the struggle to keep prayers in school.

The response by the NDC was immediate and swift following the address by the Prime Minister last night.

Within minutes of the address, NDC’s Deputy Political Leader George Prime made a television address of his own on MTV.

Prime said his party was proud to join the crusade because “evil will only flourish when good men do nothing.”

Thomas for his part said government’s apparent back-tracking on its foolish path in the education act clearly shows that united action by all segment of the population can bring about non-violent change.

The NDC leader said the solidarity between the many different sectors of the population on the issue was not mischief – as the Prime Minister had described it earlier – but fair pressure to bring about change.

Thomas said it is clear that the people are winning the fight against the ruling New National Party. He said the latest development is a small taste of bigger victories to come.

“It is clear even in the face of their immense parliamentary majority that the people can win against this regime,” he said.

Some people have suggested that the latest announcement by Prime Minister Mitchell is an election ploy to stem mounting criticisms of its education policy.

“A victory is a victory no matter how it comes or what the motive of the people who cave in is. We will take each victory at a time and be more vigilant to safeguard every gain,” the NDC leader said.

“We are not to worried what the NNP will do after election because they will not be in government to be able to execute whatever sinister plans they have. We are confident that the people will see through them and vote against them,” he said.

“Democracy will take care of that suspicion,” Thomas said.
