INSIDE GRENADA
NOVEMBER 15,2007

The following is a production of the ruling New National Party (NNP).

Government’s technical team is presently engaged with a comprehensive assessment of Instructors and Coordinators as well as the support apparatus relative to the implementation of the Grenada Training and Employment Project (GTEP). With all systems in place, the programme is most likely to begin around the end of the month.

Government’s goals are to develop a cadre of skilled workers, with particular focus on young people, to upgrade and enhance the competitiveness of Grenada’s workforce. This with a view towards ensuring that the country is able to seize the employment opportunities that are being generated by a rapidly developing economic climate in the country, the region and the world.

With the emergence of CSME, this Government is ensuring access to training that would bring a professional performance capacity to a level that is competitive in the domestic market. The programme offers the opportunity for trainees to become self employed – starting up their own businesses. It also offers a variety of employment opportunities for all concerned which is always a good thing. The certified programme is recognized regionally and as such better equips its graduates to compete in said markets.

To make this an all inclusive initiative, Government chose to involve the private sector and other key stakeholders to play a pivotal role in the identification of areas of training, and in the design and delivery of courses and training modules. This will help reduce the wastage which occurs when scarce resources are used to provide training and the trained persons remain unemployed simply because the training provided is not in accordance with the requirements of industry.

With the training of two thousand seven hundred and fifty (2750) persons in the programme the literacy up-grade augers well with Grenada’s overall social development.

The Government continues to invest in its “Human Capital” with particular focus on our Young People. The programme is designed to be demand-driven with the active participation and support of industry.

Thus far, the enthusiasm and participation by our citizens is extremely encouraging and is a strong indicator that more good things are still to come.
