ST. JOHN'S: Lack of proper housing, the unavailability of jobs and inadequate fishing storage facility were among problems identified today (Saturday, January 26) as requiring immediate government attention by residents of the parish of St. John.

“We need more work for youth in Gouyave,’’ a 28-year-old fisherman told Opposition Leader Tillman Thomas and a delegation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC)during a walkabout in St. John. "A lot of youth sit around and there is nothing for them to do. I’m a fisherman and sometimes we don’t go out to fish because there is no storage for fish, nowhere to go and put it.’’

Thomas was joined on the walkabout by NDC candidate for St. John Michael “Marchie’’ Church; party General Secretary and MP for the Town of St. George Peter David; Senator Arley Gill; Senator Ingrid Rush; NDC candidate for St. George North West Ingrid Jackson; Karl Hood, candidate for St. George South East; and Joseph Gilbert, who is the NDC’s candidate for St. Patrick West.

Church, whose opponent in the upcoming election is former Police Commissioner Fitzroy Bedeau, said he is quite confident of the NDC’s chances at the poll.
“The immediate and direct effect of this walkabout today is that it has energized the people in the community,’’ Church said. “The people are not begging for anything. They are letting us know their social problems and asking us to fix them. We are giving them the assurance that the NDC will not let them down.’’

“Thanks for coming to Gouyave,’’ Margaret Sam, operator of Margo’s Family Kitchen, told the NDC team.

Dawn, a mother of two, said she voted for the New National Party twice before but complained about the government’s neglect, especially in providing jobs.
“They (NNP) ain’t getting my vote again.’’

This was the NDC’s second walkabout in eight days.
