Members of her Majesty’s Opposition say they are yet to see the Honesty, Transparency, Accountability and Good Governance that the NDC would have promised the people of Grenada during the 2008 election campaign. In this light, the Opposition New National Party believes that the people of Grenada should not be surprised by a recent statement made by the Prime Minister, regarding the alleged suspension of Sen. Alley Gill. “This is a clear indication that what we saw during the campaign was a charade by the NDC to acquire votes at the July 2008 poll,” says Member for Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Hon. Elvin Nimrod.

According to Nimrod, the Government has been demonstrating that those words were only used conveniently. Many have expressed shock at the response to the media by the Hon. Prime Minister when he was asked about the alleged suspension. Rather than providing the public with the facts, the Prime Minister responded that this was a private matter and refused to reveal any information.

The Representative for Carriacou and Petite Martinique reminds the public that this is the same Prime Minister who claimed while in Opposition that all matters relating to the conduct of people who holds public Office become public matters. He said this new development reminds him of the appointment of the former Attorney General. The Prime Minister knew fully well that individual was involved in two court matters against the State and knew that it would have been a conflict of interest and unethical to appoint him.

The Government’s refusal to convene regular Finance Committee meetings in sixteen months is yet another example of how the word transparency was abused. The failure to provide as required by law the necessary information to the Public Accounts Committee which is set up to scrutinize the accounts of Government and ensure that there is accountability, is a confirmation that this Government has no intention to practice what it preached.
