DR. MITCHELL CALLS ON MEDIA TO DEFEND MEDIA PRACTITIONERS

Wednesday 13th July, 2011: Political Leader of the New National Party and Former Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell has taken some members of the local media to task for their apparent lack of concern for a stalwart of the profession.

During his presentation at the New National Party’s General Council on Sunday Dr. Mitchell made reference to the recent imprisoning of elder journalists Mr. Leslie Pierre. The Former Prime Minister spoke of his admiration for both Mr. Pierre as well as the late Alister Hughes who he stated never printed an article without giving you an opportunity to give your side of the story.

Dr. Mitchell stated that when he personally was slandered and libeled by certain members of the media profession and took steps to defend himself, he was labeled as the ‘worst man’. He stated that even now he holds no enmity or hate toward anyone as it is the philosophy of the New National Party that even a bad media is better than having none at all. The New National Party Political Leader called on the media to defend their brother while helping those in need.

The elderly Mr. Pierre was detained at the Richmond Hill Prison last week after a case was brought against him by a prominent local lawyer for an article which the Grenadian Voice Newspaper published. Several months ago Mr. Pierre stepped down from the day to day operation of the Grenadian Voice Newspaper due to failing health.

This is the second time Mr. Pierre has been detained, the first being during the reign of the Peoples Revolutionary Government. Some friend of Mr. Pierre, upon hearing of his plight; came up with the monies and made a payment to the court to have him released.
