THE BEST SOLUTION IN THE MINIMUM WAGE DISPUTE

As the saga lingers on in the impasse between the Minister of Labour Hon. Glynnis Roberts and the security companies over the proposed $4.00 an hour increase for security guards, Garraway advise “no effort should be spared in finding the best solution where both security guards and their employers emerge as winners.” Failure to do that he added, “Could have serious repercussions for the same security guards she claims to be seeking betterment for.”

Garraway continued by saying “the present state of the economy which the Government continues to blame for its inability to meet its recurrent expenditures is also having the same negative effects on these companies.” Hence it is important that due consideration is given to all in arriving at a decision in this regard.

The Labour Relations Officer commented: “As a responsible opposition and being mindful of the hardship our workers are facing at this time, we call on Government to put ego aside and in the true spirit of compromise implement an initial hourly rate at this point in time that both parties can accept, thereby facilitating an immediate increase for the workers while at the same time ensuring that their jobs are preserved." He advised that from discussions held between Her Majesty's Opposition and stakeholders, an increase of $2.00 per hour may be a good starting point.

Garraway also reminded the government that that debushers and recently graduated nurses among many others also urgently require attention in respect of the reinstatement of the $10.00 per day and long overdue payment respectively.
