GRENVILLE, St. Andrew – Two fishermen from the fishing village of Soubise, St.Andrew, created history this week by catching a blue marlin weighing 412 pounds, the largest on record to be weighed at the Grenville Fish Market.

The fishermen, Elroy ‘Brain’ Antoine and Kishmel ‘Smell’ Persue were fishing some miles off the Grenville coast on Thursday February 09, 2006 when they encountered the blue marlin. In relating their story to ace photographer in the town of Grenville, Devon George, the men stated that they had to struggle with the blue marlin for eight (8) long hours – from 8:ooam to 4:00pm - before they were able to get it on board their 22’ boat .The marlin measured 266cm from the lower jaw to the fork in the tail.

The blue marlins (Makaira nigricans) are known to live in tropical and warm temperate seas and are reputed to be among the fastest of all fishes. They survive on a diet of small fish and squid and make regular seasonal migrations, moving towards the equator in winter and away again in the summer.

A large crowd gathered at the fish market in Grenville to get a look at the massive marlin. It was also noticed that many of the other fishermen in the area came in with fairly large catches of fish, which could be an indication that the fish run season has commenced
