Independence Cricket Competition

St.David's Grenada - February 14,2006 saw the St.David’s Christian Secondary School (SDCSS)up against the boys from the St.Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) in an entertaining cricket match that was played at the La Sagesse Playing Field in St.David.

The cricket match was reduced from the normal 30 overs to 25 overs because of a late start. Batting first, the boys from SAASS scored 154 runs, loosing 7 wickets in the process. The top scorer for SAASS was opening batsman, Devon Walcott, who scored 39 runs, which included 3 fours and 2 sixes.L.Celestine also contributed 30 runs with the bat and Kwane Julien, 25 runs. The leading wicket taker for SDCSS was T.Mitchell who bagged 3-43 in 5 overs. SDCSS conceded 27 extras.

Chasing a total of 155 for victory - at a run rate of 6.2 runs per over - the St.David’s boys were able to get to 121, using up all 25 overs and loosing their tenth wicket in the last ball of the match. The top scorer for SDCSS was G.Barbes, who scored an unbeaten 33 runs. The leading wicket taker for SAASS was Marlon Simon, who grabbed 4 –12 in 5 overs. SAASS conceded 36 extras in the field.

With this victory, the boys from SAASS should be moving through to the next round of the competition, the semi-finals, which should take place later on this week. To date, the only school to beat SAASS is the Grenville Secondary School (GSS) in a nail-biting finish at the Progress Park about two weeks ago.
