Victoria Park, Grenville (March 2,2006): The St.Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) held its annual inter house sports meet at the Victoria Park today and based on the performances of the athletes and the turnout of spectators to view the event, it could definitely be characterized as a success. The four houses that competed for sporting glory were: Julien’s House (red), Layne’s House (gold), Nash’s House (blue) and Pigott’s House (green).

This year, some eight new records were set, one equaled and at least two came within a fraction of a second of being equaled. Lisa Phillip established new records in the sub-junior girls’ Javelin and Discus; Lindonna Rennie established a new record in the senior girls’ long jump; Jillian Stephens set her new record in the senior girls’ high jump; Marcus Mitchell set new records in the junior boys’ long jump and triple jump; and today, Brendian Zepherine established a new record in the senior girls 400 meters and the 4*100 meters relay record that was set by Pigott House in 2001 went up in smoke as the Layne House team set a new record in this event. The record in the 4*100 meters for sub-junior boys was equaled.

The sports meeting began with the usual parade of the houses through the streets of Grenville and then to the Victoria Park. Julien’s House came first in the march past followed by Pigott, Nash and Layne. At the beginning of the track meet, Layne’s House was on 297 ½ points, Pigott’s House on 470, Julien’s House on 545 ½ and Nash’s House on 341 ½ points.

The athletes from the different houses competed against each other in an atmosphere that was intense but friendly as they sought to claim sporting glory in the 48 events that were run off today. In the end, Julien’s House, under the leadership of Mr. Evans Coutain, emerged as the victorious house, amassing a total of 670 ½ points. It is the second time that the house has won a sports meet in the school (the last time was in 1977). Pigott’s House came in second with 560 points, Nash’s House- last year’s champion- third with 441 ½ points and Layne’s House, fourth, with 378 ½ points.

Lisha Williams, from Julien’s House, amassed 32 points in the sports meet and was adjudged the sub-junior girls’ divisional champion; Whalon Frederick, from Nash’s House, with 20 points was the sub-junior boy’s champion; Ocarchi Mitchell, from Julien’s House, was the junior girls’ champion; Marcus Mitchell, from Pigott’s House, was the Junior boy’s champion; Brendian Zepherine, from Nash’s House, was the senior girls’ champion; Etson Gidharry and Karel Collier, both from Layne’s House, tied as senior champs. The ‘victor ludorum’ for 2006 was Marcus Mitchell and the ‘victrix ludorum’ was Brendian Zepherine.

The principal, staff and students of SAASS, through this media outlet, wishes to thank all the sponsors of the various events, and all the spectators and well wishers who turned out to show their support for the school in this year’s sports meeting.
