MT. HORNE, St.Andrew (March 12, 2006): From around 6 o’clock this morning, residents from Pole, an area in Mt.Horne, St.Andrew, began work on a community beautification project in their village with a view to enhance the ambiance of the area.

The area receiving the attention of the residents is the main road leading to the Pole gap. The sides of the road were overgrown with grass and the drains were partially blocked with leaves, grass, bottles and other forms of debris. Well, this is no longer the case. The grass on both sides of the road was cleanly cut, and heaped in bundles. A truck, driven my Mr.Starlen Romain, was used to carry away the debris for disposal. The drains and the road were cleared using forks, spades, rakes, sticks and anything that could be used under the circumstances. The young, the old, the men, the women – all were involved in the commendable exercise. The area is now looking ‘brand new.’

It was rather heartening to see such a display of community spirit and hear the residents commenting positively about the exercise. Some were heard saying that their reward was in knowing that their community would look much better when they were finished with their work.

It is my sincere hope that residents in other communities throughout Grenada can come together and embark on community projects of this nature. We should not just sit back and wait on our governments to do things in our communities for us, but we need to take pride in our villages, come together and do whatever we can to ‘brighten our little corners’ as best as we can. Let us not ask what our community can do for us, instead, let us ask what we can do for our community.
