MWAG's Statement on Worme's detention
|
|
ST.GEORGE’S GRENADA: The Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) notes with grave concern and alarm the detention and questioning of the editor of the Grenada Today newspaper, Mr. George Worme, by officers of the Royal Grenada Police Force on Tuesday, March 14, 2006.
Mr Worme was detained for the publication of a letter to the editor entitled “Shameful and Disgraceful Grandmother” which appeared in the February 17, 2006 issue of the newspaper.
The Media Workers Association of Grenada considers the action by the Police as intended to intimidate the editor of the Grenada Today and media workers in the country.
MWAG strongly believes that if the article aggrieved anyone, then he or she could have sought redress in the Civil Courts.
The decision of the Police to peruse the matter under criminal libel is unwarranted and seems designed to pressure the media.
MWAG notes that this is not the first time the Police and Government have used the power of the State to intimidate journalists. We recall the threat made by the Government Information Service (GIS), two years ago, to use the full force of the law if the journalists were to report on the “SO CALLED BRIEFCASE STORY INVOLVING THE PRIME MINISTER.”
MWAG wishes to condemn this latest action by the Police.
