MT.HORNE, St.Andrew’s (Friday April 14, 2006): Today, a sizeable crowd converged at the Mt.Horne Playing Field, also known as Skeleton Park, to witness the fourth annual village sports meeting.

The village was divided into four zones and each zone was given the name of a flower along with a color. The lower area of POLE was given the color yellow and the flower Buttercup. They were the defending champions for three successive years. The area known as Rose Mount was given the color red and the flower Rose. The area around the playing field was given the color Blue and the flower Germanica and the area leading towards Paraclete was give the color Green and the flower Lilly.

The sports commenced with a street parade of the different teams, which ended at the front of the Mt.Horne pavilion. Rose came 1st in the March Pass, while Germanica came in 2nd, Buttercup 3rd and Lilly of the Valley 4th.

Some 53 events were run-off during the day. The athletes who competed for the different areas included former SAASS and Intercol long distance champion, Kelroy Bridgeman; former SAASS and Intercol champion high-jumper, Stalin Belfon; SJC (Grenville) sprint queens, Shenell Aberdeen, and Tasha Samuel; Kerry Hannibal, former GSS sprinter; Kendal Trotman and Bevis Roberts, current GSS athletes; Camillus Alexander, former Grenadian national cricketer, and the list can go on and on. One thing is certain: the Mt.Horne area seems to be ‘a nursery’ in that it has produced and continues to produce outstanding sportsmen in all fields.

At the end of the sports meeting, the three-year champion, Buttercup (Yellow), was overthrown. The new champion on the block is Germanica (Blue). They were followed by Buttercup, then Lilly in the Valley (Green) and Rose (Red) brought up the rear.

With greater support from the corporate community, next year promises to be a much bigger and more exciting sports meeting.
