GRAND ROY PAN ANGELS LAUNCH
|
|
By Laura Lewis
In December 2005, with a few used instruments donated from older steel bands and the use of GRENCODA’S old GRENFRUIT factory building for practice, the Southern St. John’s Sports and Culture Club started the “Grand Roy Pan Angels”. Less than a year later, the club has launched its 53 member steel orchestra comprising of 25 junior members and 28 senior members.
An official ceremony was held on May 1, 2006 on the grounds of the Grand Roy Government School. Friends and supporters gathered to celebrate the launching and listen to the sweet sounds of steel from the young band.
The Grand Roy Pan Angels were not the only sounds to be enjoyed, however. The audience had the pleasure of listening to the talented, tuned to a “T” “Angel Harps” as well as “Pan Lovers” out of Grand Anse.
Under the leadership of Director/Tutor Denver Mendes and Manager, James Modeste, the Grand Roy Pan Angels are expecting to grow and even compete in the annual Panorama competition. Mr. Michael ‘Cas’ Alexis is the band’s Tuner and Mr. Andy Chichester is the main Tutor.
At present, the band is engaging in fundraising. A series of wind ball cricket matches is being held each Sunday afternoon at the Grand Roy Government School grounds. The monies collected from the sale of drinks and snacks at this event will go towards the purchase of additional instruments for the band.
We wish the Grand Roy Pan Angels all success as they bring the community together through steel pan music.
