ST.GEORGE's, Grenada: Swimmer Tuesday Watts and Cricketer Andre Fletcher have been named the 2005 Junior Sports Personalities of Grenada. They received the awards at the 2005 Sports Personalities Award Ceremony last week Saturday at the Flambouyant Hotel in Grand Anse. Watts, who has been outstanding in recent years, again turned in a splendid performance last year.
She copped 9 gold medals, 1 silver medal and broke 5 records at the OECS level during the period. She was also exceptional at the Junior Carifta Games, grabbing 4 gold medals and a silver. Her victories included wins in the 800m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 200m free style.
The youngster continues to raise her performance and is aiming to become the first Grenadian swimmer to qualify and win a medal at the Olympics. “My aim is to win a gold medal at the games in Seoul,” she told The Grenadian Voice. She said that she will spend the next two years making a concerted effort to obtain the qualifying times. Fletcher on the other performed creditable for the Windward Islands in the 2005 West Indies under-19 competition in Trinidad and Tobago.
He recorded the highest runs aggregate for the Windward Islands and was voted the most outstanding wicketkeeper in the competition. He only kept wicket after the number one wicketkeeper feel ill. His performance earned him a place on the West Indies under-19 team to the 2006 World Under- 19 Tournament in Sri Lanka. Like Watts he wants to excel at the highest level and has promised to become a permanent fixture on the West Indies senior team in the very near future. “ I am sure I will get there,” he told The Grenadian Voice.
