COURT-RELATED MATTERS

By Davis Joseph ( St.Andrew's correspondent)

*INMATE WANTS FREEDOM*

GRENVILLE, St.Andrew’s: A prison inmate, who appeared at the Grenville magistrate’s court last Monday, is appealing to the court for his freedom, claiming that he does not want to return to the Richmond Hill Prison and live his life in confinement.

The young man, who sports a ‘dread locks’ hairstyle, is presently on remand at the prison in connection with a number of criminal offences. Although his matter is not yet completed, that did not prevent him from making his request for freedom. His sentiments were endorsed by Banister at law, Derick Sylvester, who was also present in court.

Sylvester gave examples of incidents which occurred in prison that have since become a serious concern. He also pointed out that there was an incident at the correctional facility where an inmate allegedly sustained a broken nose and lost a number of teeth. Another inmate also raised the issue of an alleged outbreak of chicken pox in prison.

*TWO ACCUSED ON REMAND IN BITTER WAR*

GRENVILLE, St.Andrew’s: The two men from the parish of St. Andrew, who are jointly charged with the Tivoli gas station robbery and murder, reportedly are in a bitter war and cannot see eye to eye.

It is understood that although both men teamed up with one common understanding- to allegedly ‘put down’ the crime- the relationship seems to have significantly deteriorated at this point. Now that they are both on remand, awaiting the consequences for their action, they are bitter enemies.

One of the men is allegedly quoted as saying that his collaborator ‘sold’ them out and if given the chance to come face to face with him, it might be a very ugly situation. The unfolding of the incident, which led to the arrest of both men, has created a level of hatred between them. The authorities are force to have both men completely separated from each other and even the lawyer representing one of the men cited a number of factors in his application to have both men tried separately.
