Blinded receives warm welcome in New York

Four members of the Blinded production team are back in Grenada after, participating in the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival.

The team which included Anderson Quarless the producer, departed Grenada on May 3rd where they made their debut by presenting to hundreds of movie producers around the World Grenada’s first ever locally produced movie (Blinded).

The opening of the festival on May 4th, gave the Grenadian team the prestigious opportunity of meeting and introducing the film to producers, actors, actresses, and film companies across the world with the generous assistance from two Grenadians based in New York. (Cecil “Flying Turkey” Belfon and Helen Grenade - Writer).

The Group was also involved in a number of interview’s, and again using the opportunity to promote Grenada and at the same time market the movie.

Blinded was featured on Caribbean Life Magazine, Black Diaspora Magazine, Black Star Magazine and Caribbean Life Newspaper.

The New York International Independent Film and Video Festival also featured a training component which included seminars for existing and novice Film markers. Mr. Quarless together with his team attended the seminars and were theoretically exposed to topics, which focus on, how to sell your film, and the real deal in producing such.

Grenada is one of the first country in the chain of the Windward Islands to produce a movie of this magnitude. However Mr. Quarless during his visit to the festival sought to make business proposals and partners around the world.

After being premiered at the Festival Village Cinemas in Manhattan in New York, the team received thumbs up for a job well done.

The viewing was attended by the Ambassador to the United Nations on Grenada, Ambassador Ruth Rouse, Counselor in New York representing Grenada, Allan McGuire, Philomena La Qua, Cecil Belfon and John Crow among others.

Quarless stated that appreciation must be shown to the Blinded Production team for their effort and support in this venture. He said the generosity of Cable & Wireless, Air Jamaica, Grenada Lottery Authority, The Grenada Cultural Foundation and the Grenada Board of Tourism cannot go unnoticed.

The agenda for the movie Blinded already looks packed for the upcoming months, the team have already received invitation to participate in the “Best of the OECS” to be staged in St. Kitts during the period June 21 - 23 2006. The event is a commemoratioon of the OECS Secretariat 25th Anniversary of the Signing of the Treaty of Basseterre with the theme “OECS AT 25”.

They will also participate in a mini OECS cultural festival at a date to be announced. Another viewing is being tabled out by a number of Grenadian’s in New York.

Team returned to Grenada on May 16th.

Background to the Movie:

‘Blinded’ made its full length debut on Saturday January 28th at the Grenada Trade Center (GTC) and February 4th and 5th at the St. George’s University and the GTC.

This is indeed was the first step for Producer Anderson Quarless and his team. The movie which was launched last year with an A plus rating have been the subject of interest on the entertainment stage here.

Quarless said, since the launch of the movie he had receive some positive feedbacks from the populace. The Blinded team after releasing the preview to the movie had to revisit the drawing board to enhance some aspect of the movie scene; since it is so highly appreciated.

The movie is geared at educating young people as to how they can avoid domestic violence and the reason why one must speak out against it.

The 1hr and 20mins production is featuring domestic violence and according to Quarless it will indeed allow both men and women to understand there role in society how they can overcome life’s challenges and embrace the opportunities.

Already Blinded has not only made its debut here in Grenada, but was featured highly in the BBC Caribbean Magazine on Monday January 30th. Discussions are currently ongoing to enter Blinded in the New York Film Festival. It is anticipate by the Blinded team that the business sector will buy the idea and use it as a gate way to promote Grenada on a broader spectrum.
