MORNE LONGUE, St. Andrew’s: Residents from the idyllic village of Morne Longue, nestled at the foothills of the historic Fedon’s Peak, came out in full force, on Thursday May 18, to partake in a community project - spearheaded by a village disaster sub-committee - in keeping with NaDMA’s week of activities from May 14 – May 20, 2006.

Only Monday of this week (May 15, 2006), the NaDMA St. Andrew’s NW District Executive, headed my deputy coordinator, Mr. George Alexander, visited the village and helped put a village disaster sub-committee in place. Mr. Anthony Copin heads this sub-committee.

The newly elected executive was able to demonstrate its seriousness by quickly meeting and selecting a project to work on in the area to help promote disaster awareness. On Thursday, under the leadership of Mr. Copin, villagers were mobilized to come out and cut down a tree that was hanging precariously over the road. They also cleared a landslide that was partially blocking the main road which is the only route leading into and out of the village. The turnout was good, the villagers worked enthusiastically, and the work was completed within the day.

If one has to make a judgment based on what has transpired at Morne Longue during the course of this week, it would undoubtedly be that the villagers in the area are serious about disaster preparedness and are geared up to work conscientiously towards significantly reducing the damage that a hazard can cause if it impacts on the area.

NaDMA’s week of activities in the St. Andrew’s NW District comes to an end with a church service at the Morne Longue SDA Church on Saturday May 20, 2006. The service will be conducted under the theme: Preparedness begins with you.
